bfg 6800 ultra

Hello,

Up until now i really had no need to worry about framerates (only place halo ce and CS) but since the advent of the new bf2 game have i run into problems.

Here is my setup:

winnie 3500 2.2
bfg 6800 ultra
1 gig ram

i had everything set on max and was getting less than 20 so i cut back on all the eye candy and still have low scores...

I am 1024 x 768

without a reduction in resolution should there be anything that i can do to increase the frame rate?

didnt have a problem in halo or CS but now the numbers are down...

after messing with the controls of the card and a reboot I now can get frames ranging from 30 to 50... is that par for the course?

cpu is running at stock 2.2... is something bottlenecking performance? I would think I should be able to get significantly higher scores with the card...

by the way, I am ignorant to a lot of this so take it easy..k....lol

please advise if you can...

thanks

jd

It's the RAM. Reportedly BF2 requires more than 1GB of ram if you play with full server or much filled server
If you cannot upgrade your RAM, set the sound quality to medium, that lowers 200MB of memory usage

Do you get 20 fps during online play with many people, or single play with many bots?

Also, lower the "Lightning" setting from high to medium
That's the most resources blogging setting.
Medium is the default setting for "high quality" already

ok heres what i have done and it seems to work better... on the settings i have it set to application controlled.. seems to never run under 30 and usually in the 40's and 50's... will do some of the things that u have suggested too...

thanks a bunch...

didnt really think the card was at fault

will consider the ram too...thats another can in itself...

oh yea... i am in singleplayer right now....have noticed the same thing on multiplayer but just thought it was lag until i ran frags...then it made me start to wonder...

Ive got a Winnie 3500+ also
Plus an X850XT-PE
1Gb Ram
Audigy 2.

So weve pretty much got the same spec really.

But i get a lot better FPS, definitly better than 20, i havent checked properly, but i know its smooth, and i doubt i would find 20 fps smooth.

It must be someting other than BF2 thats having a problem.

Edit: Yea changing your settings to Application Controlled will help it tremendously. I think when the driver is set to do AA and AF, it puts it on everything, no matter what it is. And there are no optimizations. So make them app controlled. As the game will be better at figuring out where AA and AF is best used, and it also can be optimized. Or another reason is that the driver and the game were conflicting with it other giving you low fps.

dont use FRAPS....because of the way it works it sometimes has an adverse effect on performance, it happend to me in SC:CT and i believe it does it in this too, your better off using the console command to find your FPS

yea changing them to app controlled did a lot... am up in the 50's and some 60's with some time in the high 30's and low 40's when i gets intense...thanks for the help...

in getting another gig of ram does it have to be exactly like my other gig... i have some ocz 3200 el plat r2 that i bought back in Nov ( i dont think they make it with the same chips now)...anyway...will something else suffice?

by the way i ran across some reading in the forums about turning off ur fast writes in the bios to help ur frame rates...safe?

any thoughts?

and in regards to console command, I am totally ignorant on what u are inferrng...

thanks

Yes, Fraps can mae a game laggy, best get newest build and still it can make some games laggy.

If the game looks ok to your eyes why bother with FPS counters ?.

Just use the built in frame counter - renderer.drawfps 1 from the console. I get ~ 50fps on my GT at 1280x960 4x8x. All high except medium textures (only 1GB RAM).

I used fraps due to the fact that it was choppy and slow...thought it was a lag problem until fraps showed me the numbers...since then i have learned to set the video card as "application controlled...big difference...

how do you access the following:

Just use the built in frame counter - renderer.drawfps 1 from the console. I get ~ 50fps on my GT at 1280x960 4x8x. All high except medium textures (only 1GB RAM).

is this through windows or some other medium...totally ignorant on how to access...

thanks

Just hit ~ in the game to bring down the console, type in the command and hit enter. Press ~ again to close it.

Hopefully dice comes out with some game optimizations as BF2 is a horrible resource hog....like the worst I seen...

Hopefully im able to run good settings with my new rig... =D

ok... i utilized this command ` and the top portion of my screen turned white and asked me for a command...the only thing i knew to do was type "frame, framerate" i do not know the command to activate the proper sequence...

Type in "renderer.drawfps 1 " without the quotes, "renderer.drawfps 0 " to disable
