BFG 6800 Ultra in this mobo?

I'm running a GeForce Ti4600 at the moment, and looking to buy a BFG 6800 Ultra to replace it. My worry is it working well with this mobo. I know that the video card is 4x/8x AGP and backwards compatible and that my mobo supports 4x but does it have balls enough to run this card?

I called BFG tech support and the guy said it should work, but that I would have problems with it. Either installation wise, using it, etc. etc. The power supply is not of concern, as it is a 550w Antec.

What do you guys think?

All AGP8x stuff is supposed to be backwards compatible with 4x, as per the specification; however, I recall hearing about some problems with various cards, so I guess YMMV. I don't think you would experience much performance penalty, if any, as IIRC AGP4x isn't even completely saturated yet, though it's being pushed.

My main concern is that if I buy this card, I want to make sure that it delivers performace without causing problems to occur while using it. My Ti4600 just isnt cutting it for HL2 and Doom 3, and even EQ2 is a bit lame due to having to turn off all the eye candy.

I like seeing the effects, the eye candy, hence my buying a new card. I just dont want to buy something that will cause me more problems than it is worth.

That video card will work fine in your system, but considering the age of the motherboard, your CPU may still limit your performance, unless you have a 2.8b or 3.06ghz CPU in there, it won't use a 6800gt to it's full potential.

You'll CPU bottleneck that card for sure i'd say just from the sound of your setup...

I'm still not sure aobut buying a BFG card, just looks like the next Visiontek to me heh

Out of curiosity, what are your system specs (specifically CPU)?

Sorry about that. My system spec's are:

2.4ghz Pentium 4 (non-OC)
1024gb RDRAM (PC800) (4x256)
Intel (Lexington 2) Pentium 4 mobo
Sound Blaster Audigy w/ IEEE 1394 sound card
Western Digital 80gb & 120gb 7200 RPM hard drives
Visiontek nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4600 128mb video card (non-OC)
Lite-On 40x 12x 48x CD-RW
Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM
Windows XP Home Edition

I do plan to upgrade the mobo and proc within the next few months though. I just want to be sure that when I play HL2, Doom 3, EQ2, I can play them with AA/AF, and all eye candy turned on without a hitch.

you might want to hold off on the video card for a couple months and see what the first gen nforce 4 mobos have to offer if you plan of upgrading the system in the near future

You'll also need to get new ram, as there are no more chipsets supporting RDRAM. You can likely sell that gig of RDRAM on e-bay for a decent amount.

That is what I was hoping to do with the RDRAM to be honest. =)

The sad part is, I am actully bidding on RDRAM on e-bay right now, as my dads computer uses it, and he only has 128mb with windows xp.
