BFG 6800 OC mod...

I was testing the card with Real-Time HDR IBL.
And I was surprised to see temps go upto 72C..!!

It didnt crash nor have any artifacts, but I thought that was little high.

So, I've ventured into taking the heatsink apart from the card.

hmm gummy stuff used on gpu and heatsink and harder gummy stuff used between ram and heatsink.

I didnt have any Idea on how to replace the gummy stuff between ram and heatsink if I remove it, because the gap between ram and heatsink is greather than gap between heatsink and gpu. I just removed the gummy between gpu and heatsink and used some Arctic Silver3 I have.

also there were some gaps between ram and the heatsink on some points but after using arctic silver, the gap is gone (due to closer gap).

Right now temp is steady at 59c. ^^*

It now ocs higher on gpu. 400 from 380 before.. ^^* will test some more.

and perhaps I dont have to do voltmod. my goal is 400/900

nice, any idea if there are gaps on a pny 6800gt? and do you thing they used the same crappy thermal paste on it? Maybe i should use some artic as well....(=

no idea.. but I've read about gaps on other videocards. check it out to see.
im very surprised how much difference arctic silver made.

its not going anything over 60c now. and core is doing well @ 400 so far. no luck on memory however.. cant go over 880 -_-; oh well.

I applied Ceramique on the GPU after removing the original stuff. I dropped 2-3C at idle. Now I idle @ 53. This is still at stock speeds: 350/700.

I managed to snap one of the mounting studs on the heatsink when screwing it back on. These things are weak! Heatsink still seems secure.

When you reapplied your grease, did you use one dab in the center or did you spread it?

Also, have you unlocked your pipes/vertex shader? I have, though it shouldn't matter for idle temps.

hmm thanx for the info on snapping the leg off.. I will try NOT to use too much force ..

I spread it just on gpu and placed heatsink and lifted it to see how it fits. it made a perfect square imprint on heatsink so it seems to be making a good contact.

yep my card is unlocked fully as in my sig 😉
