hello everyone,

i have this strange issue with the stock fan on my 6800 gt oc. the fan seems quiet in windows, but when i reboot the computer it kicks up a few notches and becomes very noisy. once i get back into windows, it quiets down again. also, when i uninstall the video driver, go into the BIOS to configure settings, or even go into DOS mode, the fan is noisy. what is the cause of this? any replies will be appreciated. :)

Im not an owner of a 6800 in any form but I have heard that the card has a 2D and 3D operation. The fan spins up as the card detects 3D applications and clocks to its 3D speed setting.

Perhaps the card doesnt detect whether the bootup requires 2D or 3D operation so it spins up to 3D operation?

It would be best if someone with the card in question replies.

Its normal, dont worry.

once it starts up, theres no sortware/driver to controll it, but once you're in windows, those apps kick in.

it is an annoyance because the fan is loud and i do sometimes spend a lot of time out of windows configuring things. oh well, i guess it's something i have to deal with. it's a great card in any event.

yeah, I understand your pain.

I have a 6600gt and it does that too, actaully it used to be at max the evne in windows until i finally found something on the web to controll it.

If you really are sensitive to the noise, you can get an aftermarket cooler like the nv5 or something, but I never thought that was worth it
