Hi,
System:
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 512k 90nm Rev E Venice
MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum
2 Gig DDR (400) 3200 Corsair
2 WD 7200 160 Gig HD's
Sound Blaster Audigy
Generic Modem
Generic 1.44" floppy
BFG 6600 GT OC PCI-E / ATI Radeon SDR 32MB PCI (Old Skewl!!)
Antec TruePower 2.0 TP-II 550W Power Supply
This is a really crazy problem. I had gotten all my components except my new vid card (the 6600) and I couldn't wait to put together my new system. So i pulled out an old PCI vid card (the Radeon SDR 32... board doesn't have an AGP slot =/) from the closet and put it together. Everything worked perfectly fine. A few days later FedEx got there act together and I got the new BFG 6600 GT OC. So I remove the drivers for the ATI Radeon SDR 32MB PCI shut down the PC and put in the BFG 6600 GT OC PCI-E (making sure to wear my anti static wrist guard). I boot up the PC and it preforms the POST screen like a champion. I hit DEL and enter the BIOS. Change the vid card from PCI to PCI-E. F10 save the changes and im out. Again Post screen works great. Then when I get to the point where windows (Windows XP Pro SP2) should show the "Windows Loading..." screen nothing happens. It just stays black. Ive left it on up to five minutes and it always remains black. I eventually have to hold down the power button to shut the PC down as the hard drive activity light shows NO activity from the end of the POST screen as soon as it just goes black. When I start it back up i get the "Windows failed to start up normally" screen. Ive tried all the options.. safe mode, safe with networking... they all just end up hanging after scrolling through the command lists you see before safe mode normally starts, or it hangs on that same black blank screen when trying start windows normally or with last known working configuration. So I put back in the ATI Radeon SDR 32MB PCI (change the BIOS setting back to PCI) and windows loads up no problems. I don't know anyone who has a PCI-E board so I can't pull the card and try it on another system. Its strange how the POST screen works, yet the card somehow blocks windows from loading. As an interesting side note I tried to reformat while I had in the BFG 6600 GT OC PCI-E. It loaded up some setup files like Win Xp normally does when booting from the CD. The really strange part is that it hung when it said "Setup is starting Windows". Had to again power it down manually and again no HD activity at that point. Could it be a BIOS setting I've forgotten to change? Here's a link to the mobo, manual and BIOS, http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=637
It just might be a faulty card, it happens.. rare but it happens. Without another system to be able to test it in makes things really difficult =/ . Thanks for taking the time to read my post and reply with any thing that might bring about a solution ~ Sauropelta
