BFBC2 Hard lockup...PB? MSI AB? ATI CCC??

Hi All. I have been playing BFBC2 for nearly a year now and up until 5 weeks ago I was using a GTX 260. The system in my sig has been in place since Nov 2010. I am well aware this game is glitchy at times, but the only thing I ever had annoy me while using the GTX 260 was the screen would occasionally & randomly go totally blank but the game would continue fine until I moved around to a different spot. Concluded this was a driver issue.

When I got my 6950 (unlocked shaders only, OC to 840/1325 using MSI AB @ stock 1.1v), did a complete driver sweep and installed the Cat 11.1 drivers and played the game flawlessly @ 1920x1200 4xAA/8xAF without issue for a month. Just this past weekend, the game hard locked on me 3x. Put the card back to stock 800/1250 speeds and still locked up ~ 20 mins into playing. I was using a custom fan profile in MSI AB, fyi and card never got hotter than 55c.

Immediately suspected failing RAM, so did a 24 hr memtest + rerun of OCCT but there are no errors so ruled out a hardware or CPU/MB OCing issue. Next I uninstalled/reinstalled the game, same with MSI AB, and did another cleaning and updated to Cat 11.2 drivers....but still same issue.

Googling this problem there are numerous discussions about possibly punkbuster interfering with CCC in some way in this game. However, I believe this issue may be related to MSI AB and CCC not playing nice together. Once I closed MSI afterburner, I played BFBC2 for 4 hrs without an issue! Unfortunately, this means I am limited to CCC Overdrive and manual fan control as opposed to being able to ramp it with temp.

Why would MSI AB suddenly not work with CCC in BFBC2 after a month of working without issue? This makes no sense... anyone else have this issue and what was your solution?

Was away for a few days and I see no one replied to this thread. If anyone cares, it appears Punkbuster's 3/9 update for BFBC2 is fubar. The problem seems to be affecting mostly people with 6900 series cards and some 5800 series that use ANY type of monitoring program while trying to play BFBC2. This includes MSI Afterburner, which I had been using for OCing and the custom fan speed profile.

The game doesn't crash at all as long as I don't have MSI Afterburner running. Just got finished playing yet another 4 hour stretch with no issues. But I hate being limited to CCC AMD Overdrive and manual fan speed control while playing.

Hopefully PB gets this shit fixed soon. Just stupid.

It locks up while running Sapphire Trixx as well...very annoying.

Pretty sick of PB and it's bullshit tbh.

Interesting... I just tried to play tonight and had many lockups. I don't have afterburner installed but I am using GPU-Z as well as CCC to monitor my GPU. I'll see if I can get it to play smoothly without GPU-Z running. I'm glad to see it's not only me with these freaking problems...

Yep, GPUZ locks it up too. Guys at overclock.net tried to use that as an alternate to MSI AB to monitor gpu temps but apparently PB doesn't like that program either. Close it down and you'll be fine. Annoying shit isn't it? Nice QA/QC...not!

Wow, this is good to know. Had my first hard lock on my system yesterday during a BC2 game and started worrying about my hardware going bad. I run GPUZ in the background to make sure I'm not locked into 2D clocks (500mhz) from Youtube or related flash videos before I try to game.

All I can say is "thank goodness that PB sucks" I say that as I was really getting worried my system was not stable. I had run MANY hours of MANY programs to ensure my overclock was good so this was kinda freaking me out. Time to go back to my OC and just not run GPU-Z while playing BC 2.

Now if only new vegas would run without crashing... ;)

I'm glad this thread and this issue is getting some attention. I would hate to see some poor college kid spend a couple hundred changing out PSUs, RAM, whatever only to find the problem was stupid Punkbuster.

Edit: Visited the EA forums today and there is at least one person with a GTX 450 with the same issue so I can't solely blame AMD's drivers either.

Once again...great job Punkbuster. Equal opportunity for suckiness.

Wow, I was just gonna post something regarding this issue as well. I've got a GTX 260 and last week my computer BSOD'd about 4 times while playing. This has never happened to me before and I thought that I might have to test my hardware but I never have this problem in any other hardware-intensive games.
I manually updated punkbuster and I only had 1 BSOD last night.
Hopefully they can fix it up cuz its very annoying.
