got an invite to the bf3 alpha test  :whiste:

wo, does fb2.0 eat my graphics!

running 5850, q9400, 4gb, ssd

backed away from high details 1920x1200, ALL the way down to settled...wait for it, 1400x900 on low details!

OMG, time to go shopping..looked at one "superclocked" 570 which was a MASSIVE 12mhz over the 785mhz stock! lol

..is it worth spending extra on a 'clocked' 570 or stick to a basic one, do some basic oc'ing meshelf and pocket the extra? (oc'ing the 5850 to 800/1200 with afterburner did some good, but oc-ing never does much!)

I think you are more CPU limited there, I am running my sig rig, and am getting good FPS at 1600x900 at medium and high. Also realize that the alpha has no Dx11 yet it is only Dx10.

yeah the cpu is 95% ish most of the playing time, got a core i5-2500 lined up, but need new 1156 mobo for that..prob get a lazy bundle from somewhere :whiste:

Before you buy a new card you need to try and be sure what the reason for the poor performance is. Example, If the problem is lack of vRAM (not saying it is, just that it could be), then the 570 might not help, as it doesn't offer much more vRAM than the 5850.

Also BF3 still has a ways to go, so I imagine with patches/driver updates, there is a decent bit of performance to be gained in the game still.

I would hold on mate, new cards coming through in a few months.im biased also as i own a 5850😛

If mnewsham is doing fine with his rig at 1600x900, then your graphics card isn't the problem. His Radeon HD 5870m is only as good as a desktop 5770, and your desktop 5850 is better than that.

Yeah i notice a bit of stuttering now and again but nothing i can complain about really. I have my 5870m Oc'd a bit right now too but still not near desktop 5850 levels.

something else my be choking his system.

gtx570 is running fine in Bf3. I'm having no issuing with it at all.

That would mean the op needs to overclock his cpu, your 5850 with your cpu at 3.8 is much faster than his 5850 and cpu at 2.66

BUT, I still dont understand why turning down the details made things better for him.😕

less cpu load = more fps when cpu is bottleneck

IIRC one of the posts on this forum's BF3 had a link to some site that has done a GPU test on the alpha release of the game. if you want 60fps at 1920x1080 minimum, then you need to be looking at SLI/Crossfire. But as mentioned, the game is still alpha so it might all improve.

But turning DOWN the details would not change his cpu load, it would change the gpu load.

Simple,
The OP said his q9400 @ 2.6 with a 5850 @ 1400x900 was not cutting it.

Takenoprisoners said his Phenom II @ 3.8 with a 5850 @ 1400x900 was running just fine.

Diffrence? the cpu.

I was just using that as an example.

Others, apparently are getting acceptable frame rates with the 5850. So, it's something else that likely replacing the card wouldn't fix (unless the card is defective, somehow). My only point was for him to trouble shoot it more so he wasn't wasting money by replacing the card.

Your CPU is too slow. 570 will do nothing for you, you will be equally disappointed. In fact, nvidia cards are less efficient than AMD cards on CPU cycles due to driver overhead, so the problem would be worse.

We dont know what the settings do to CPU/GPU usage yet.. FB2 if according to the release videos is a lot more advanced, in terms of model animation (CPU intensive), physics (very CPU intensive) and world destruction (very CPU intensive).

I have the Q9400, at stock it was bottlenecked in BC2, at 1080p. Overclocking it helps a lot.
