I love my new display, I really do. It's an Acer 22'' 1680x1080. I know Battlefield 2 supports 1600x1200, I've played on it. I also know it doesn't support widescreen. So, is my brand new display only 120 pixels short (1080 v. 1200) of upping from 1280x1024? It's the max it shows, but I've heard of people playing at my native res...what's up?

Right click on the BF2.exe icon and go to properties and on target, add this:

+szx 1680 +szy 1080

For some reason, they thought it would be an "unfair advantage" for some players to have a widescreen monitor, yet they don't limit your framerate or video settings if you have a high power video card... Nice logic...

This has come up so many times AT probably has a disk devoted to the threads. If you're not seeing 1600 x 1200 as an option then something is up with your video drivers, DX9, or operating system installation, or BF2 installation, because it ought to be informed of the availability of that mode.

As for the suggested wide-screen res hack, it works for some, doesn't work for others, and doesn't produce a true wide-screen view, as the game code was not written to correctly calculate the field of view for wide screen resolutions.

Edit: btw, is 1600 x 1200 shown in the driver control panel display resolutions? Part of this might be the .inf file for your monitor.

He meant 1680 x 1050 obviously.

PB won't kick for specifying the resolution via arguments. You're just changing the target line for the BF2 shortcut. So if you somehow in any way mess it up, just delete the shortcut and create another.

1600x1200 doesn't show up probably cause it is greater than your maximum/native resolution. Same thing here.

Btw, for some stupid design reason, when you specify a widescreen resolution for BF2, rather than gaining more viewing area on the sides, you lose viewing area from the top and bottom, since it crops a larger image. How's that feel to get a nice WS and not only not gain viewing area, but lose some! Bah! I still put up with it and use 1680x1050, but compared to games where you get "true" widescreen, it's pretty disappointing. Check out the WidescreenGamingForum and you'll fine comparison shots where widescreen is done right and where it's not.

Doesn't really work. All it does is stretch the image.
I don't think so. The HUD components MIGHT get stretched but I haven't even noticed that.

I think those screenshots and that thread are from people messing with the FOV to try and get true widescreen or use with dualhead or triplehead displays. And PunkBuster doesn't take kindly to the FOV change, if it can even be done anymore.

Specifying the resolution via arguments is fine and doesn't stretch, but it is Vert-. Try it out yourself or check out the Vert- screenshots on WSGF to see if it is worth it for you. I personally use it in spite of Vert-, as opposed to 1280x1024 with black bars on the side of the monitor.

The image is not stretched in BF. The Hud is yes. Basically it zooms in and chops off a bit of the top and bottom. For me personally even though it chops off part of the image its worth it to fill the screen and zoom in.
