I think I'm bottlenecked with my 6600GT? Take a look at my sig and tell me different. I may try some overclocking with the cpu and the gpu to see if that helps...

I probably need a 256mb+256bit bus card to reach highest eye candy with this game?

yes, you will likely need a current-gen card to really reach the highest eye candy. It is a hardware-demanding engine.
the amount of ram you have will not help with the textures. And you could have a 256mb card and still not be able to run anything past medium textures because the card may not be able to handle processing the textures along with everything else on the screen if the card isn't a high-performance card. more memory doesn't automatically qualify you for better textures, the card needs to be able to handle them at the same time as all the other processing (and i think i just went redundant there lol)

hope that helps ;)

Ya the 6600GT is the bottleneck, but I see that u have a AGP s939 board! Upgrade the board!! Buy a good PCI-E card!! If not, buy the 6800GT or 6800GS, the gs isnt out yet but if u can wait its a good upgrade.

No the latest drivers give me BSOD with nv4.disp.dll problems...

I use the 77.77 drivers with no probs..

Well all is not lost because I do load the map a hell of a lot faster with 2 gigs.
Would a 6800GS if ever come to AGP or X850 XTPE be better. I really like Nvidia but I may be convinced to go to the dark side.ATI

One thing you can try, since you have a lot of ram, is to go into the BIOS and open up the AGP aperature. If it is set to the stock 32 megs then the card is having to work harder to swap textures out of system address space. I set mine to 256 megs and it made a huge difference in performance.

more like the 'red' side ;)

and, yea at least map loads are fast lol

the x850xt pe is a powerhouse for an agp card, but it has a real low power-to-cost ratio compared to the cheaper 7800gt and, hell even ati's x1800xl
but to upgrade the mobo to pci-e and get a pci-e card would probably break the bank compared to just upgrading to another agp card

but here's an idea:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130238
free evga nforce4 sli mobo
sure its $80 more than a better evga 7800gt model, but you can overclock that card without fear of breaking the warranty (but its not the copper heatsink model, but of which you can also replace and still stay under warranty, go evga!).. but even so, if you look at it this way, its still a great motherboard for $80.
And i hear its a solid overclocker too, but dont take my word, search for some reviews ;)

good luck to ya, and happy hunting
