BF1942/Desert Combat - crash regularly for everyone else?

While I love this game, this is without a doubt the most crash-prone game I think I've ever played - even throughout all the various patches and versions which actually seem to be making it worse instead of better. My main W2K home system regularly crashes back to the desktop whenever I play it. I've thought maybe it was the setup on that particular system so I tried fixing all the usual suspects, but it still does it. I even tried it on my old W98/W2K dual boot system. It does it on that one too despite various attempts at fixes. Tried my XP system at the office - does it there too although not quite as much; then again I play it a lot less there too.

I asked my coworker and it crashes all the time on him too. Are we in the minority here or are others having as many problems as we are? It still plays fairly good at times, but I'm lucky to get more than 20 minutes of gameplay in before it crashes. Once you cross multiple hardware and OS platforms and still run into the same problems it makes you start to wonder if you're not alone. I know it's a popular game here at AT so I thought I'd ask. I'm not going to give up on the game, but it is rather frustrating.

Edit: I guess I should note it only crashes during online games so it's most likely something to do with the netcode (which I've never been a fan of.) I have cable, we have a T3 at the office and my coworker has DSL. I can play wonderfully fun games against the bots for hours. :(

I don't really have any issues with BF:1942 and DC. Once in a blue moon it'll kick me out to the desktop but not like your 20 minutes.

I would try to update your video card drivers, make sure you got the latest chipset drivers, and even sound card drivers.

Aside from that what are your specs on the system? Are you overclocking any?

I've got all the latest drivers, patches, etc. (and this is across multiple systems with different OS's and hardware.) And like I said, it only seems to happen on online games. My system at the office can usually go a lot longer before crashing, up to an hour maybe but rarely do I have that much time to play there. It's really frustrating since JUST when you get settled into a game it crashes on you for no apparent good reason. I did some more reading around at other BF1942 forums after posting this last night and apparently this is a fairly common problem. It's a shame since it's an otherwise fantastic game.

The only problem I have is the 2nd time you try to enter any servers, it will drop you back to the desktop.

Other than that, I can play for hours at a time online or offline

Yup, and it's something I can live with ;) I wasn't bitching about it, just commenting on it :)

For what its worth I have been geting thrown back to the desktop more often now than when I started playing the game, not sure if its the patches that have caused this or some of the mods I have loaded.

Awesome mod. Throws me to the desktop quite often on MP. SP plays like a champ. Latest drivers for everything, and latest .39 patch. Oh well. CS:Condition Zero will be here soon <hopefully>

Are there any other games like BF1942 (other than the yet to be released Halo) that allow you full interaction with all the vehicles?? I LOVE this game, but the constant crashing makes it unplayable and sucks the fun out of it.

Like I said in previous posts I get the same problem across multiple computers, with different hardware configs, different OSs at entirely different geographic locations. One or two computers and its probably an issue on my end. Four or five computers (seven or eight if I count similar issues among co-workers) and it's the game.

So what other choices like this are out there (if any)? I don't follow games as much as I used to, but I'd like a good multiplayer game like this without having to go back to old vanilla FPS games.

I can play till the server reboots(meaning quite a few hours ussually.)

got around CD check issues by making images of the game cds and mounting them, using programs called virtual daemon and DDump

Edit: I own Bf1942, RTR, and Secret weapons.....but I hate CD switching, and checks in general

Only real complaint other than that is that sometimes my thumb mouse button(my 'reload' button) would stop working, but last patch seemed to stop that from happening.
