BF 1942 - Where are the submarines?

I am new to bf1942 and have played all the single player missions and played a little over a lan. Are there subs in this game or not? There are pics on the preview screens, instructions for them in the manual, ships have sonar and depth charges, but I have yet to find one anywhere.

Can someone guide me to the correct place to find them, are they hiding under water?

Yes, there are submarines in the game. I don't remember the map, but it's JAP vs USA, with a island in the middle of the map with 2 flags for it, one for the airfield and the other for a small building with a cannon bunker. Two other flags on the map are north and south of the small island. Both sides start out with a battleship, carrier, a submarine, and several destroyers.

only in the mulitplayer games, not in single player

Then again they are not that good really since all you can do is shoot ships for the most part and everyone is on land most of the time.
