BF 1942: Now That's a Shame

Insidious

Bought a copy of BF1942 last night at BB......... Installed it......... tried to play it........... It exited with a beep to the desktop. :disgust:

Poked around a bit on the EA website tech. support and found my answer........

Question
BF1942 (PC) - CRASH - Crash to desktop with an error Beep - ** Windows XP **

Answer
PROBLEM:
After showing a full black screen the game crashes back to the Windows desktop and an error Beep is heard. The computer is using Windows XP.

SOLUTION:
This indicates a trouble with the refresh rate of the game. Some users may have a program installed that forces a higher refresh rate than 60 Hz (e.g. Refresh Force) if so make sure that his is closed down before running the game..

Next set the Windows refresh rate to 60 Hz:
Right click on your Desktop and Select "Properties". Then click the "Settings" tab. Click the "Advanced..." button. Then go to the "Monitor" tab. In the drop down box below where it Says "Monitor Settings", change that box to 60 Hz and try running the game again. This should solve your issue.

Also, Make sure that you have closed any programs or tasks running in the background as sometimes one of the programs can conflict with the game. Background applications such as anti-virus programs are often the cause of conflicts.

Hold down the Ctrl, Atl, and Delete keys at the same time
This will bring up the "Task Manager", follow the steps bellow in order:

1) Click the "Processes"
2) Click on the User Name button to sort by user name
3) Click on anything besides EXPLORER and TASKMGR for this User Name or other user names. Do NOT select anything for SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE.
4) Click on END PROCESS
5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 until only explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe are open for this user profile.

OH YEAH, NOW THERE'S A GAME I WANT TO OWN :disgust:

Traded it back to them for a copy of Empire Earth.

You should have taken a little more time to look around, there's a simple fix..upgrade to retail patch 1.1, and all you have to do is open a file in notepad, replace a 0 with a 1 and you're done.

EDIT: I guess, if you still have it installed, i'll give you the directions..

Go to your Battlefield 1942 folder, then open up the Settings folder
Open up "VideoDefault.con" with Notepad
Go to the very bottom line that says: renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0
Change the 0 to 1 so it reads: renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1
Save, Exit, Play.

yep, this problem was widespread and they released a patch to fix it

too bad you're missing out on a great game

Thanks for the fix info. guyz

It's not lost forever..... we'll give it another try when we are ready for the next addition to the library.

edit: On the bright side, Empire Earth (Sierra) is a lot of fun (if you like M$ AOE, you'll love this one)

PS: wierd that this wasn't published within EA Tech. Support..... doubt if I'm the only sale they've lost

thats funny..if you want a game that works right out of the box on every single system....go back to consoles

This game is extremely buggy and unoptimized. I'm holding off for a few more much needed patches before I'll even consider purchasing this game.

On a side note: the UT 2003 demo is excellent. Good representation of an optimized game, and what to expect from the final version.

Actually the UT2k3 demo is not what to expect in the final version. The final version will be much improved. For 1 thing the detail textures are unavailable to save bandwidth. Too bad UT2k3 doesn't have the great gameplay I hear BF 1942 has. Although mods may change that slightly.
