BF 1942 loads dead slow?

I just put BF 1942 on my grandsons puter.
He has a 3000 Xp, 400 FSB, 512mb, TI 4200 64 MB, running Win XP pro.
When BF tries to load it gets to the EA white display screen then it crawls for about 30 minutes before it loads.
I am using the latest 6.1.76 driver. UT2004 runs fine on his system so I think it is something to do with this game.
Any ideas (help) appreciated.

30 minutes?? :Q

Does it appear to be accessing the CD drive while waiting? I don't play BF1942 much, but using a NoCD patch might help. Be sure to backup the original files.

I don't have a no cd patch for BF 1942. Other games that require the cd play ok, Call of Duty runs fine. It is probably something simple that I am overlooking, but I have no clue what it is.

Try either of these, I would try the shortcut first:

Add +restart 1 to the shortcut's target line

or

Go to your EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Movies directory and rename all the files to anything except the default names..
Dice.bik -> Dice.old
EA.bik -> EA.old
Intro.bik -> Intro.old
legal.bik -> legal.old

ymmv, but by adding an additional 512MB of RAM, I noticed a considerable increase in load times when I was playing BF1942.

But 30 min seems horribly slow. I was talking about a difference between 5 min with 512MB to 1 min with 1GB.

Its some kind of a glitch with the intro movies. This happened to a friend of mine, when he would load Battlefield through AllSeeing Eye it would go straight into the game. If he used the icon to start a single player game it would sit forever while the movie stuttered by.

HI styrafoam, The movie re-naming helped a lot. Is there some player I don't have or something missing? BF plays fine on my other computers.
I was not sure where to add the +restart 1 to the shortcut's target line.
would that be after the part that says "battlefield....... .exe" I tried it there and it said it was not valid.

Right click on the battlefield shortcut on your desktop, on the shortcut tab where is says:

Target: "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe"

Change it to say:

Target: "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe +restart 1"

I'm not sure why it happens, but he was running an Asus GF4 ti4200 on an Epox 8rda nforce2 motherboard. The videocard is similar, but BF:1942 ran fine on my Gainward ti4200. I honestly have no idea why it happens.

Do you have the latest version of DirectX ?
If renaming the movie files helped, it does sound like it's having a problem playing the movies.
It could also be some issue with the sound drivers trying to play the movies/music.

30 minutes is definitely not a memory problem.
I run BF on an XP1700+ / GF3 Ti200 / 512 MB PC2100.
It takes 30-60 seconds from the time I start the game until the map is loaded and I start playing.
But I always run it from All Seeing Eye so it automatically skips the intro movies.

EDIT: You can always try a re-install of BF as well. Sometimes the install gets corrupted for some unknown reason.

Like was said earlier, make sure you have DirectX 9.0C loaded and the latest nVidia drivers. What kind of CDROM drive is on the system? ...maybe it's dog slow? I also highly recommend installing to a clean partition and defragmenting that partition. All games load faster when they're on their own defragged partition....especially hogs like BF.

What is this?

All Seeing Eye is a server browser program used to find and join multiplayer online games. When you use it to connect to a server the game starts directly from the loading screen, skipping the intro movies.
