Since modern phones have glass all the way to the edge why not get rid of the bezel/borders completely? Have an active display "coast to coast" and top to bottom! Before people say that won't work and since we're moving to eventually what may be 4K displays why not introduce virtual bezels?

End users can pick how wide they want the bezels. Another trick is to have the screen active to the edge but map the active (touch) area only to a certain point. This way false touches from gripping/holding are eliminated.

Also give a choice of what kind of buttons, docks, you name it.

Get rid of the presence of (hardware) buttons completely. The Nexus 6 has none and it works great.

Speakers could be on the very edge, slots like on the Surface Pro 3. The actual speaker component would be deep inside with a tunnel to route the sound through the edge of the display.

There would have to be a slight inactive edge for things like sensors, front facing cam, etc.

But yes, it would be possible to have a near "bezel-less" design without the typical ergonomic difficulties with such a design.

And get rid of non user enabled boot loader locks enforced by carriers while they're at it!
This sort of thing?

I'm not that keen on that look.

Front facing camera is on the bottom? Sounds like the XPS 13 where people will get a nice view of my nostrils.

I'm all for shrinking bezels, but I don't know if removing the top one entirely and sticking everything at the bottom is the best approach. I'm ok with non-symetrical like the G3 though in all fairness, it'd be interesting to hear real-life feedback from owners of this phone.

Nope, that still has a bezel.
And ouch, square edges too!

Well if there's no bezel at all you would have to do away with the forward camera and all the forward sensors.
And unless you have a very 'interesting' shaped screen you're going to be stuck with a very angular phone, I don't see how you could get round that.

Well, that phone has ear piece, speaker, and mic all at the bottom. Plus the front-facing camera. I commend the out-of-the-box thinking, but practicality is also important and I read a review that its call quality is below par, which is not surprising.

Yeah, my point was that no bezel at all is not really an option. Even with one theres lots of problems.
