I just played Beyond the Sword and my first impression is not that good.

The "new content" is just a compiled lists of mods made by the community. I started up the first mod and sat through a 10 min dialogue of comic strips.

"You only won because you cheat" "It's called tactics kids" ....

At that point I got pissed I just stock to the "Play Now" option.

I'll try the "New content" later to see if it gets any better.

As for the regular developer made maps I was hoping to see more future tech. in units and advancements. I would like to see my civilization in the year 2200 with space stations and photon torpedos...

To me this whole new addition feels like a mod worth 15-20 dollars at best. Like the Alexander campaign for Rome Total War.

Hmmm...

Try playing a normal game not a scenario and say that. Espionage system is all new (love it or hate it), but definitely something that was sorely lack-ing compared to what Civ1&2 offered. Let's see, the privateers and blockade system is sweet. Apostolic palace is a nice mid-game UN feature, but I don't feel it added any real value personally, much like the UN. Better late game unit variety, cruise missiles finally back in, tweaked siege weapon mechanics. "Colonies," though a very week implementation, are quite useful. Also, the big & small, medium & small & hemispheres map types are excellent.

Oh yeah, random events are new and fun imo. Also, corporations which I think suck in their current implementation but have promise and admittedly I've experimented with them very little.

Espionage (needs work), new civs, new wonders (apostolic palace needs fixing badly), new techs, tech tree realignment (prolongs period between muskets and rifles), corps (inflation needs work), etc. All-in-all, a lot of great new ideas that have been implemented decently, just needs a good set of tweaks.

At least he started a new thread to rant instead of using the original one.

i've heard (and only sort of experienced) that aggressive AI is more like a normal game (in the old versions) and that normal AI is a lot more peaceful than previously

I like most of the changes. The re-parenting of some of the techs is a good change. The spy system is kind of neat, but I think the AI devotes entirely too much resources to it, which weakens them overall. The corporation... I don't know. They seem awfully costly for what they provide. Overall I like BtS, at least it added more than Warlords.
