Beyond Radeon 3870

I am looking for the best bang for the buck.. I play in 1680x1050.. I'd like to play with some anti aliasing on w/o it killing my card.. 4770 the card to get right now? 100 bones is a nice price point 🙂

I used to have a 3870 but I game on 1920x1200 so I went with a 4870 1 GB. I think the logical progression for you would be a 4870 512 or higher, if you want Nvidia then something in the 200 series. I think a 4770 is a lateral move at best with more benefits on lower power draw and temps. It would work best on smaller, HTPC type machines. I never tried SLI or Crossfire so I'm not sure how great a number of these will perform in that setting.

The 4770 is a forward lateral for sure. In the ballpark of 25-40% faster and 40-60% is shader intensive games.

Unless you use alot of AA, the 4770 a bit better. I would recommend you go for a 4890 if you jack up the AA at the very least.

4870 1gb or GTX 260 core 216--- Don't spend the extra money on anything better--These are great cards for 1680X1050. DX 11 is just arround the corner so save some money.

I had a 3870 and then went to a 9800 GTX there wasn't that big of a difference--to justify the extra cost. I wouldn't go with the 4770--there just not that fast.

Before I upgraded to a 12x12 monitor I played AoC at 1680 with a 4870. It played very well with 4xAA at that res. You can find the 4850 for around $100 and the 4770 for around that price. Both are quite similar in architecture and should play that game quite well at that res.

You definitely want a 4770 or 48xx series card for AoC, the cards seem to perform much better than any of NVIDIA's offerings in the game. If you can put up the money, grab a 4850 1GB or 4870 1GB (or even 4890) if you want to play around with AA in the game.
