After installing Catalyst 8.9, on the state-of-the-art Intel system in my sig, I immediately started experiencing regular skipping of both the audio and video of Blu-Ray movies on the system in my sig. I've troubleshooted to the extent of doing a complete re-install of Windows Vista (with an image of my previous install available as well) and the behavior manifests in all cases.
Every ten seconds or so, any Blu-Ray movie skips and jitters briefly, for a second or so. In fact, the problem occurs in EVERY instance of video and motion graphics, including 3DMark, DivX and QuickTime movies and every other media I tried. Even screen savers do this! I've tested on a completely new install barebones with Vista 64-bit, SP1, and only the movie playback software installed. Same issue.
At first, I was starting to question my purchase of an ATI card. In desperation, I tried one last thing - restoring my image, and downgrading, carefully, back to Catalyst 8.8.
Voila! Playback is smooth again! All graphics work flawlessly again!
Do NOT - I repeat DO NOT - use Catalyst 8.9. It is loaded with bugs. No graphic application with motion or animation of any kind will work. At least, in my experience.
At some point, I may report thsi to ATI. If anyone is smart over there, they visit these forums and will catch this. IF they want me to QA their product, I expect to be paid for it.
