Beware of "news" banners at the bottom of AnandTech reviews

After my work shift ended recently I killed some time by browsing AnandTech for the latest tech news and made the mistake of clicking on a so-called "news" story about a daughter that Donald Trump keeps hidden. I ran into ransomware that that locked my employer's PC. My boss was very cool but I had to ship the infected PC to IT for re-imaging and from now on we can only do personal browsing on our own devices.

Friends, though we love AnandTech, DON'T assume it's safe.

I turned off my ad blocker briefly and clicked some spammy looking ad and it took me to one of those talking web sites telling me my PC is infected. It's not, of course, but WTF is Purch doing running ads like that???

They pay money like every other 😀
I don't think our overlords have complete choice what ads are being served... after all ads today are targeted
