Beware - I see a lot of bad advice in this forum.

There's a few people that offer great advice...but there's also some bad advice here IMO. Don't assume that everyone that answers your question knows anything useful. This forum section has been this way for years.

Just a head's up for the newer people.

There's been one post that really irked the heck out of me - someone did a QFT to something that wasn't true and could have easily been verified. leave that silliness in the OT.

LOL! :D

I'm not perfect either, but I do have 18 years of experience building/repairing computers. :)

So point out other people's bad advice when you see it, explaining what exactly is wrong with it.

I'm sure the poster will thank you for it, having learned something useful.

Or flame you - this is dependent on their age I find... :p

I only offer advice if I have solid knowledge and experience regarding the topic in question. The good advice I have received via the AnandTech forums has saved my ass on more occasions than I can count; the least I can do is return the favor with sound advice of my own when possible. :D

I agree. I'd much rather read a specific comment from someone with a different point of view, than a vague and pointless complaint about the forum in general.

So? I've had like, 50 years building computers, and even longer programming them. I was there at Abacutex 1900 when they were introducing the theory of binary computing! I had a Commodore 64 back when they were considered classified military technology! So nyah nyah! :p:p

Well, I don't like to say anything, so I just offer my viewpoint. People are just trying to help one another, you can't fault them for trying even if the advice isn't that good. I am just hoping that the people posting problems here don't think that everyone that answers is some sort of expert, as nobody is the "all knowing" authority, myself included. I just hate to see people led down the wrong path. That said, most of the advice given here is quite good...but the poster must beware.

You should never come to these forums if you expect to get a perfect solution to your problem!

There is never just one solution to a problem anyway.

The main benefit from these forums is that you get many points of views.
After getting these points of views, you should use your judgment and decide how to move ahead towards fixing your problem. You are the one who is in charge.
You should accept responsibility for what you do on your computer. Even if someone told you to do it. You have the choice no to!

I don't think anyone here is paid for giving advice.

The only thing that you have to offer in a place like this is your opinion, even if you believe your opinion to be fact. This holds to be true, even when you know you are right, for someone else might have a different term for something than what you have. (Huge mixup in hard drive overhead for me--that is where I learned that).

That is the thing that kills me about everyone asking for advice on picking out a xxx for me. I've always enjoyed doing the research and planning out what I'm going to get next. I have lists for all of the hardware I ever plan on getting, and I keep it updated. Now, if you are looking for options and opinions, that is when you post here, and see what people have to say.

And in all honesty, you should always take anything that anyone says with a grain of salt. If you the type that believes everything, you shouldn't be here, and you should be listening to Coast to Coast or something...

My thoughts.
Tas.

what's "bad advice"?

Like.. INCORRECT advice, or MALICIOUS advice? (Like... "right click on C:\windows and select 'delete'").

I don't really care if it's incorrect - I mean, there is a problem, and if a person tries something that doesn't work... well, that's what we call 'troubleshooting!' You can eliminate (at least) that variable.

Stupid advice is something different... but if you're dumb enough to not throw any caution to the internet... well, maybe you shouldn't be here.

I try to give the best advice I can, based on my experience.
