Anyone pick this up?

This album is fucking fantastic.. probably their best yet. I cannot stop listening to it. It's hard to define this band with a genre without cheapening them but the best I can come up with is progressive hardcore w/ elements of jazz, country and blues and a sprinkling of classical music for good measure. A lot of people complain about this band initially because it seems very spastic and ADD to them. They change styles and timing so often in the songs that at first it's a bit overwhelming. After a few listens everything falls into place though.

Seriously this shit is epic, go grab it if you're a fan of heavy progressive music.

I like Silent Circus and Alaska much more.

All you Dream Theater and Opeth people will like Colors, though. Black Dahlia Murder and A Life Once Lost's releases on Tuesday overshadowed BTBAM's release in my book.

Really? I have a special place in my heart for Silent Circus and their self titled but Alaska only had a handful of tracks I really liked. The new BDM CD is pretty sick too.

Hardcore vocals, which makes it unlistenable to me

Either use low growls like Opeth or use clean vocals, core vocals suck

I've just grown tired of the sprawling/epic songwriting style of progressive metal. The "progressive" metal bands I'm into these days are Sikth, Protest the Hero, Dillinger Escape Plan, The Human Abstract, etc. Tighter songwriting, just as much weirdness.

DEP are ok on CD but live it's almost unlistenable.. they miss half their notes by throwing themselves in weird positions all over the stage :p

But seriously, I hate when I hear a really talented band with awesome music ruined by bad vocals... They would be better off making an instrumental album

Puciano certainly isn't CD-perfect, but I'd rather see him spazz out like a gorilla on speed than stand still and be on-pitch. The 3 times I've seen them, the rest of the band is 100% on point though. Amazing musicians.

Colors has more clean singing than any of their previous work

The difference I guess is that I don't think they're ruined by the vocals, if anything it's enhanced for me. Hardcore vocals aren't for everyone though. Luckily BTBAM has a lot of instrumental stuff on this album so you might like it for that aspect of it.

Maybe I caught them on an off day live, the guitar player and bass player were like nonexistant in a few songs because they were on the floor writhing or kicking shit over.. they're incredibly talented musicians and that's what I want to hear live.

Admittely I havent really heard it throughout (just had a quick listen), but most bands that combine core vocals and clean singing usually have the whiney teen vocals ala my chemical romance, which I cant stand either :) This is a problem with most metal fans, which I also happen to share... Metalcore is really hated for a reason

But Between the buried are a good band, no doubt, and nobody sounds like them... Its just a shame they have poor taste in vocals :p
