Hi:
I want to build a new system for my database application.
I have a very huge table, which size is more than 1G.
Sometimes, I have to wait for more than 5 hours before the current PIII 800 + 128M PC133 system.
There are two options:
Pentium4 1.5G + 128M Rambus
Dual Pentium3 1G + 512M PC133
Their prices are similar.
Is there any benchmark for them?

Thank you.

another vote for the dually with lots of ram. the p4 isn't a great performer for server type stuff right now.

another vote for the dually - that must be one huge database. You may even want to up the RAM even further, to prevent swapping - since price doesnt seem to be a concern while your looking at those configs.

Dual P3. Sounds like you need at least a Gig of Ram. Probably more maybe in the lines of 2 Gigs.

Lol....your P3-800 would wipe the floor with a P4 1.5Ghz if you upped the P3 to 512MB RAM. The P4 1.5 w/ 128MB wouldn't stand a chance against a Dual P3 1Ghz with 512MB RAM.

It's like OuterSquare said: << Those two machines aren't even in the same league. >> A P4 1.5Ghz with 128MB RAM is a fairly high end desktop....a Dual P3 1Ghz with 512MB is an entry level server. The desktop would get it's ass kicked.

A Dual P3 1Ghz has much more CPU power than a single P4 1.5GHz, and you deifnately need alot of RAM. 128MB in an application like that is a joke, 1/2Gig (512MB) minimum.

I'm not that acquainted with dual processors, but your OS and application both have to support it to get any benfit.

What OS and data-base program are you running?

I would say this comes under the office heading of the processor benchmarks that are run. The P3 and the Athlon both beat the P4 in those applications.

An AMD with the 760 chipset and PC2100 memory would probably be the faster solution. You might want to check out micronpc.com and see if their systems with PC2100 are in your your price range.

In any case the more memory the better.

Uh... Dual P3 with DDR is available now, the AMD762 and VIA KT266 Dual solutions are on the horizon.

To me, this question was like asking,

I'm going to a drag strip tomorrow, should I bring a viper with slicks or should I bring a porsche on bicycle tires?

:)

Viper for me, assuming no one has done anything to the tires. ;)
