Between 9800gtx+ and 4850

Im looking for a card thatll perform anything at throw at it at 16x10 and under res. Which of these 2 cards would be the better buy? One concern I have is overheating. I dont want to have any problems with heating issues and Iv heard that the 4850 does have some problems.

I run f@h 24/7 on my 4850 with it oc'd to 690/1075. I have absolutely zero heat issues. Also, it only cost me $140 AR. I set up a custom profile and have the fan steady at 37%, which is inaudible over my case fans. If you're extremely sensitive to noise and have a noiseless system you can get an accelero s1 v2 for $35 shipped and oc the hell out of it and not worry about noise. I'm not sure what 9800gtx+ is going for but I'm fairly confident that these prices compare quite favorably.

Most web sites show 9800gtx+ and 4850 as roughly equal in performance. 4850 does have a pretty good advantage as you crank up the AA, but 9800gtx+ is faster with no AA.

edit: looks like the asus for $178AR shipped is the best deal on a 9800gtx+ at newegg right now, while $155 AR shipped is the best deal on a 4850. keep your eyes on the hot deals section and jump on the next 4850 deal in the $140 range.

9800gtx+ is 200 too, so thats kinda tough. If i was to go with a 4850 it would be the visiontek one as they have a lfietime warranty and i hear there CS is good. The visiontek 4850 is 169 after 20 MR

At 16x10 both will run great.

You could also get a GTX260 for $245AR or a 4870 for a little more.

4850 is the better card if you like AA. Also, if you throw on an after market cooler, you'll probably be able to get some very nice overclocks. Overall it's the better card IMO.

I like the 9800GTX+ cooler better but if you don't mind adjusting the fan speed on a 4850 I believe it's a better deal.

Radeon 4850 w/ free copy of GRID That's a very good deal with a good game IMO.

4850 is a lot cheaper now in the USA. even if you add the cost of an accelero S1 it is still a lot cheaper. so i would go with it too.

I'd take the his card with free grid, you could play grid until you got bored with it and sell it for $10-20.

I'd get the HD4850 and throw on an Accelero S1 and overclock it. I did that and I don't regret it one bit.

That eliminates any cost benefit you might bet from the 4850 plus voids the warranty.

It's not like it's so unlikely that one wouldn't do the same with the 9800GTX+.

Actually, it is pretty unlikely. At least the cooler part. I can see, and understand changing the cooler on the 4850, but not the 9800. I'd say, if you are deciding to go with the 4850, try to find one with a better cooler from the factory. ASUS, MSI, and I believe HIS have their own coolers. Try those.

For those who can o/c their 4850 to over 700 Mhz, what method to you use to bump your voltage up? Most 4850 can't go over 700 Mhz without bumping the core voltage.

If I'm considering oc/ing my 4850, but I will not do it until I can be pretty sure that I can get it enough juice to go to at least 700 Mhz (on a stock cooler). Anything less than 700 Mhz is not significant enough for me to mess around with. Eg, a 50 Mhz bump is less than a 10% in core clock increase and is probably too insignificant in gaming.

I have an intel P35 chipset, so I can't do SLI, and this chipset is too slow to CF.
But hmm a combo of a 9800GTX+ plus a cheap (ebay) 8800GT/9600GT for Physx sound intriguing to me. hmm....

Well, you don't need an aftermarket cooler. With stock cooling and just a little crappy exhaust fan below the card, you can already get some decent numbers. The aftermarket cooler is just an option to further enhance the card.
