I'm debating the merits of these two coolers.

Xigmatek HDT-D1264

or

Xigmatek HDT-S1283

I have been planning to pick up the 1283 because of the great reviews. Then today when I went to order it I saw the 1264. I'm wonder which will work better for my situtation.

I'll be OCing a 2180. MB is a Abit IP35-E. Case is Antec 900.

With the Passive North Bridge am I better off with a Down force cooler?

I like my HDT-S1283. It's equaling the performance of my lapped Tuniq Tower on my lapped E6300. I've got the MSI P35 Neo2-FR & it has the heatpipes on the chipset.

This morning I read THIS review.

To save you some clicking, here is what they said:

"However, it proved that the problem lies specifically with the heatpipes positioning, because once we moved the cooler with its heatpipes facing upwards, the thermals got back to normal and all tests were a pass without any problems. To tell the truth, this is pretty strange because we haven?t seen anything like that during our previous tests of similarly designed cooling solutions. Besides, the heatpipe performance doesn?t really depend on its positioning. In case of XIGMATEK HDT-D1284, we have double-checked and confirmed the direct dependence of the cooler efficiency on the heatpipes positioning. Maybe the elbow curve or larger heatpipes diameter (8mm instead of the standard 6mm) or even the heatpipes direct touch technology affects the results? Of course, it would be interesting to see if the same dependency occurs by other samples of the same cooler, but unfortunately, we do not have the chance to check it out yet, because we only have got one sample at hand."

I'd stick with the Xigmatek HDT-S1283.

Wow, Thanks Twist. I guess that answers things. I just have read in reviews that passive cooled North bridges do better with down force CPU coolers.

I'm going with the 1283

Good choice. I've pretty thoroughly torn that review apart, the way heatpipes are made gravity really won't make a difference, they're method was flawed and that conclusion should never have been printed. Down draft versus tower is really situational but, in a 900 you're much better off with a tower. Enjoy that 1283!
