Using a Winchester 3200+ and 6600GT right now and my parents are giving me $500 to spend on an computer upgrade before I start college in a couple weeks. Which do you think is the better upgrade choice the X2 4400+ or the 7800GTX?

I like to play games but I dont think I'll have as much time in college to play them as I do now so I'm leaning toward the X2.

Nothing else in my system is really in need of an upgrade.

EDIT: They wont just give me the money, I have to spend it now

save it, wait till you can do both,

or maybe, sell that 6600, pick up a nice cheap/2nd hand 6800GT to just boost you abit, and then save the rest for bigger an better

but actually since i just read your going to college......dont bother, spend it on some wicked speakers or something. a good sound system goes down better in halls than a fancy graphics card

or you could use it as drinkin money :D

7800GTX will give you the largest performace update in games. 4400+ will only give you a marginal performance difference in everything else if you are a heavy multi-tasker and/or use multi-threaded applications.

you have a VERY solid machine right now. I can't even believe you're suggesting to upgrade.
I've a 9800xt with an amd 3400+. Upgrading anything has never even crossed MY mind. BF2 doesnt touch my setup

I know my PC stuff pretty darn well, but...different consumer. In any case, I wud say 7800gtx as upgrading gfx will be simply another card. cpu is pretty good anyway, just OC it since your heart is upping.

DEFINITELY wait it out! Current high end cards go for around 500 which is more than the xbox360 will retail for AND the xbox360 will have significantly better graphics hardware than the highest end PCS currently do. Wait for the next generation of cards that will beat out (or match) the next gen consoles.

Hell no im not joking. I certainly wont buy a 500 dollar graphics card only to have it surpassed by a 300 dollar console in a few months. Wait until the next generation hardware hits.

Check your wording there.. thats probably where the confusion is coming from. The way you wrote it, you're saying the xbox360 will cost more than $500.

wrong.

Xbox 360 will be running a X850XT (correct me if im wrong) but by the time there will be cards far better then that.

Heck now there are cards far better then that.

Plus Xbox 360 is gonna cost a sh!t load of Cash, around 700 bucks for the system, 2 controllers and a couple of games. (Each game is gonna cost 60 bucks)

Just play BF2....64 players and its just awesome.

Where do you get your info? From what I've read, the system is supposed to be $300 with just the console + controller. All games released by MICROSOFT will cost $50(this doesn't include 3rd party game producers EA, etc.). But where that $700 came from, I'd think you're on drugs. No one would buy a console for $700.

Yes I made a mistake, sorry. I meant that the top end graphics cards cost 500 and the xbox360 will be cheaper (300 or 400 dependant on version) and that the xbox360 will be faster. Everyone makes mistakes, and I?ve also had a 20oz beer while watching the red sox. I am pretty certain that the beer is responsible for my slip up. Anyway, i personally would wait for the next gen graphics cards.
