Better than a 9600 Pro?

It should be faster due to 256bit memory. On the other hand, the core speed is a bit slower than a 9600pro. I'd say overall it will still be faster than the 9600pro.

K thanks, i'll tell my friend to RMA his 9600 pro that came DOA, and we'll pick this up 🙂

It's a little better than a 9600Pro and it only has a 128bit memory bus not 256.
Better off getting a 9600XT

It says 256 bit in the title, is that true or not?

i think ses are still 256bit, but only 4 pipes. it would be better because it may be possible to unlock the extra 4 pipes, maybe??? still, the bus makes it better than 9600 i think

Some have 128-bit, some have 256-bit. I would generally advise avoiding the 9800SE entirely and trying to get a used 9700Pro or 9800NP, or just a 9600Pro/XT (since they perform similarly at stock, and the 9600s will probably overclock more).

If you have a 256-bit 9800SE, you can try to softmod it into a RADEON 9800 by unlocking the other 4 pixel pipes. YMMV. I'd rather just get a used/refurb 9800/9700Pro instead and not play the softmod lottery.

OK, i'll just tell him to go ahead and order one of those Sapphire 9600XT's when they're back in stock, thanks a lot guys 🙂

The 4 extra pipes can be unlocked probably about 70% of the time.

I personally don't recommend a 9600 XT of any type, they have a very bad performance/price ratio, and this card outperforms the 9600 XT without softmoding, the one tested at Tom's VGA Charts is the 128bit 9800SE, but this one has 256bit memory bus cuz it's the C3 model, I have it, and it's a great buy for it's price unless you wanna buy a used card. It also has a great chance to softmod into a Pro. I'd say get either this card or a used 9800Pro/9700Pro, or maybe a 9500 Pro if you find one.

yes it's better than what you have... but not THAT much.
if you have success to mod to 9800 Pro then should be an OK upgrade.

It's not for me 🙂, its for my friend, he ordered a 9600 Pro off newegg, and it came defective. He just returned it today, and I said i'd help him find another card (he doesn't want a 9600 pro anymore) He's just using his 9200 in the meantime. Whatever card I help him choose, it's going to be paired with an A64 2800+.

O YEA! 17 DOLLAR RE-STOCKING FEE! thanks a lot newegg... I see your dark side now!!!

did you call newegg first? they probably would of waived the fee

ok, he's requested RMA, but hasn't shipped it yet, who does he call? Can anyone that's done this before get me a number, and set me up with a scenario of how to ask this? Thanks!

the number is on the newegg site. when you call you dont really have to say much, newegg has awesome service and wants to keep your business. just mention you weren't aware of the restocking fee, and I bet theyll waive it.
