better Spam and AV filter gateway?

Barracuda or MailFrontier?

or, if you have other suggestions, please do.

right now we use GFI mail essentials and mail security and it's not the most user friendly thing to use when releasing spam and attachments.

OpenBSD and their spamd(8). I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but from what I've read it's the way to go.

Any of the free anti-virus solutions should work too. They've got a couple in ports. Amavis and clam are in the ports tree.

We use Barracudas in a load-balanced environment at work. You do have a pay a subscription fee for the auto updates for SPAM/AV definitions, but it is very easy to setup, and very easy to use GUI interface, and works out of the box (rackmount appliance). It also has options for any/all email alerts/reports.

does it give users the ability to release their own spam? in case of a false positive.

how about their own attachments?

are you using your own LB or does the device come with the capability?

Yes, but you must either use end-user release/checks or admin level checks, not both. This however, is a feature request to possibly provide both with future firmware upgrades.

The devices provide their own LB clustering capability.

Here's a link to a testamonial of one of the original contributers to the instructions about what happened when they switched TO Barracuda from this setup.

Joe

PS... Hmmm.... looks like it's similar to the flakshack above, but has instructions for a few different distros and both free and open BSD. It also includes the addition of Pyzor and ClamAV

PPS... DOH! the freespamfilter.org link for OpenBSD points back to the flakshak link!

I'm doing a build of that on debian. It has taken a while to configure, but I hope it cures my spam problems. My old mailserver installation is getting long in the tooth, and needs to be retired.
