When it activates, hook it up to some high powered lawn sprinklers - but aim them sideways, from one end of the fence to the other.

That way, you (probably) wouldn't hit anyone on the sidewalk...but anyone getting close to the fence would get it. Side effect, you could just point them AT the fence, so that the fence would automatically be washed off. :)

The more I think about this, the better an idea it is. I have motion detector lights in my backyard, but motion detector sprinklers would be 100 times more effective at deterring people. I'm pretty sure I could rig it up so that when I'm home, the lights come on with motion. But when I'm away/on vacation, I could flip a switch and have it activate the sprinkler system instead. HMMMM. Added benefit, I dunno if you've ever been walking around at night when someone's sprinklers fire up, but the noise can scare the hell out of you if you're not expecting it.

That's a very interesting idea, I like the benefit of washing the fence. :)
Just wondering how you would get the sprinklers to come on when the lights come on? You'd need some kind of electric pump or a switch on the faucet or something, eh?

About 20-25 feet behind the camera, I was standing right at the corner of the neighbors' garage(they hadn't moved in yet).

why would anyone be walking on that sidewalk if it abruptly stops like that? does it take you through to another street or something

Behind the camera leads to the main street, where the bus stops as well. The sidewalk leads into a side cresent, in the picture.
We went to the house one day when just the framing was up, and a bunch of neighborhood kids were playing in it. I didn't bother saying anything, but I'd imagine they'll all be coming and going along there.

Here's a simple 3 step solution...

1. Get one of those giant super soakers with the backpack water tank.

2. Load it with pee/ink/flesh eating bacteria/beef broth/whatever. Be creative!

3. Wait.

Nothing like catching a faceful of someone else's cold piss while tagging a fence in the middle of the night. That'll make them think twice before hitting it again.

1. moat. salt water. Sharks w/ frikin laser beams.
2. Satellite Monitoring System, Laser Guided Missiles.
3. Lots of Saran Wrap (around planks of fence.) ;) Might make cleanup easier, just remove and re-wrap.

Looking out with assistance of my Light in the Attic I'd say somewhere by The Giving Tree.

that's a lot of waiting just on speculation that it might get tagged, just keep it well lit, motion sprinklers is a good idea, though sucks for the cat that goes by!

We'll be putting up a fence around our house this spring. There is a public walkway between our house and our neighbours, so I'm expecting a pretty good chance that my fence along the sidewalk will get tagged by some punk kids.
My first line of defence is a paintball gun. Since our bedroom window is along that side of the house, I'm looking forward to hearing them shuffling around out there at 2 in the morning and slinking out quietly to cover them with 200 rounds of paint. :D
I suppose the nerd's solution, which I'm also considering, is setting up a webcam by the window. I'd at least have evidence for their parents.

Anyways, is there any other option to stopping petty vandalism like this? Maybe electrifying the fence or something?

Bear traps.

How about spending a lot of time out there gardening or whatever and getting to know the kids and saying "hi" and all that? Try being neighborly.

Then if they still mess up your property you can use all these other lovely ideas.
