Better solution to stopping kids from spraying your fence?

We'll be putting up a fence around our house this spring. There is a public walkway between our house and our neighbours, so I'm expecting a pretty good chance that my fence along the sidewalk will get tagged by some punk kids.
My first line of defence is a paintball gun. Since our bedroom window is along that side of the house, I'm looking forward to hearing them shuffling around out there at 2 in the morning and slinking out quietly to cover them with 200 rounds of paint. 😀
I suppose the nerd's solution, which I'm also considering, is setting up a webcam by the window. 😱 I'd at least have evidence for their parents.

Anyways, is there any other option to stopping petty vandalism like this? Maybe electrifying the fence or something?

I like the paintball gun idea.

Maybe you can put some throny bushes on the walkway side of the fence? Make it annoying to get to. They'd have to be pretty deep though. Maybe 3 or 4 feet?

Hmm, that's a good idea. I could bring the fence in a foot or so, and put some bushes up there. A little more landscaping, but it might help.

That's what some TV show recommended for stopping criminals from entering windows. Put up thorny bushes. It wouldn't do a lot of good if you want most of the fence to be visible, but if you're just putting it up to have it, the bushes would work well.

Motion-detector and fully automatic machine gun?

Thorny plants might be a better idea.

Though if you're willing to set up a web cam, how about getting decent shots of their faces while they're painting it and sending them to the local police?

I love the paintball gun idea. How about one of those IR beams and floodlights. Set the IR beam about three feet from the fence. When they walk up to the fence to tag it, they break the beam and trip the floodlights. Thier faces will be nice and bright for your cam - and easier targets for the paintball gun.

Hehe, I'm looking as cheap and lowtech as possible. 🙂 Although that would freak them out, no doubt.
I think bushes, a keen ear, and a few cases of paint are gonna be my only defense once we move in. hehe

No, I live in a new suburb. But with the walkway beside our yard(it leads into a cresent, off the main street we're on), it's to be expected. Kids these day, eh?

Definately just setup a fake looking webcam or a cam just to deter them. If they strike then I would suggest maybe growing some grass over the wall. Taggers won't want to hit that.

Do you live in a bad neighborhood?

We don't even HAVE guns up here in Canada. No worries there. The worst I'll get is an extra round of eggings when Halloween rolls around.

whoa, you live in saskatoon too.

hmm.. just tell me where you live and i'll tell my friends not to graff on your fence.

just kidding 😉
