Better recording with TV2000XP?

I am trying to record shows with my TV2000XP and have tried mpeg2 and mpeg1 at various quality settings. The problem is that one hour of recording takes over 1.5 GB of disk space. I have been downloading episodes on kazaa and I can download a 1 hour episode in perfect quality in only 450 MB. So how come it takes me 3 times more space.

Any suggestions on improving the MPEGX compression or on using an alternate codec. I have tried DIVX and XVID and they compress nicely but are more prone to errors when another program is running. Also I tried using mp3 and WMA audio but both had lagging and sync problems.

Thanks

Have you ever gone to the vcdhelp site? www.vcdhelp.com. I am into capturing video and converting it it vcd or svcd with tempec. On this site you will find lots of information and tools. There is even software for capturing video that can be used instead of the software than comes with video capture cards. I hope this helps
