Better online experience - PS3 or 360?

I haven't bought a console since Dreamcast and the only reason I bought that was for fighting games, most notably MvC2. Other then that I'm entirely a PC gamer since consoles suck in comparison.

I'm trying to decide what the better console is mainly for fighting games online. I have no experience with the PS3 but I've played a buddies 360 online. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 is on the 360 for Live Arcade and that's a big plus for me over the PS3 (I know PS3 has MK2 but meh). AFAIK, Street Fighter 4 and SF HD Remix for arcade will be out for both systems. I played the HD Remix beta on my buddies 360 and I must say it's very solid.

People with time spent on both systems:

1) Which has the better online experience (I'm aware xbox live costs money but it's not a concern)?
2) Which has the stronger library of fighting games?
3) Which makes the better HTPC? The only thing I plan on doing is streaming movies (mostly xvid) from another PC in the house. I imagine both can easily accomplish that equally? I know the blu-ray is a big plus on the PS3.

Thanks in advance for any feedback. I'm going to pull the trigger this weekend for sure and right now I'm leaning toward the 360.

Better online: 360
More players, voice chat, stronger all-around online system

Better library: Pretty sure it's equal between the two

Better HTPC: PS3
It's quiter and plays Blu-Ray. Though the 360 can stream xvid just fine.

Thing to note: The 360 controller has a crappy D-pad, so if you mainly use that for fighters, the PS3 is probably better. But if you already played it on the 360 without any problems, then I would go that route, especially if you have a friend who has the system, too.

360 Fighting Games
PS3 Fighting Games

The 360 has Dead or Alive 4, Fight Night Round 3, Rumble Roses XX, Guilty Gear: Overture while the PS3 does not.
The PS3 has Tekken and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm while the 360 does not.
Soul Calibur IV, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit, WWE Smackdown, Street Fighter IV, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, and Virtua Fighter 5 are on both.

I also think the 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 had some features that the PS3 version does not?
Soul Calibur IV for the PS3 will have Vader while the 360 version will have Yoda.

More people to play with on Live plus easier to connect to friends.
PSN is free.

Both are perfectly capable of streaming xvid movies. The 360 can stream Netflix too if you have Vista. The PS3 obviously has the Blu-Ray advantage.

You can rent movies and buy TV shows over Xbox Live. Sony is supposed to bring a similar service to the PS3 this summer.

edit: Def Jam Icon removed from games that the PS3 does not have. It does have it.

I played Def Jam Icon on the PS3, but not online..

I have a question about online fighting games in general.. how is lag on whatever connection you have? I notice a lot of very odd things when playing Mario Kart Wii online: players jumping around, falling off the side and appearing back in place.. It's only mildly annoying in a racing game, but I imagine it could be a deal breaker on a fighting game where split second timing is critical.

In my limited experience, it depends on the game. For example, out of the three 2d fighting games I've played I'd rate them as:
From best to worst:
1) Street Fighter 2 HD Remix Beta.
Superb. I noticed zero delay no matter who I was playing against online. It felt like I was playing offline locally in 2 player against someone in the same room.
2) Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
I did notice slight delay every now and then but nothing that made any kind of major impact on how the games were played.
3) Classic Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Absolutely terrible compared to the above two titles. In the majority of games, the delay made a big enough impact to negatively affect gameplay. In a few games, it was so laggy it was completely unplayable.

I've only spent a total of 8 hours or so on a 360 since I haven't bought one yet but from what I can tell the delay depends entirely on how the games netcode was written just like PC titles. In Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, the pre-game screen shows how strong your internet connection is to the server and it didn't seem to matter how crappy the opponents connection was so I have to assume when games start they are hosted on the server instead of being connected directly via peer to peer. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

It should be pointed out that Virtua Fighter 5 has no online functionality on the PS3.

Xbox 360 I would say. Online is better, way larger game selection, very few games for ps3 are split screen, xbox gets more downloadable content. For GTA4 the 360 will be getting updates, for PS3 there will be no extras. The xbox controllers are so much more comfortable. I generally don't play consoles but out of those (both of which I have played) xbox prevails. They may have a higher failure rate, but under warranty you can get it fixed for free.

Until SC4 comes out, the only online fighting game that the PS3 has is Tekken 5 (and an older MK game?). That's pretty much the decider there, IMHO.

not trolling at all. Its an honest opinion that i think most would agree with. I have both systems, and if I have to choose a system for a muli-platform game, 100% of the time i will go with 360 just because of LIVE.

Live can be had for about $30 a year, and is worth every cent over the steaming pile of crap sony calls online service.

Why would you spend $30 a month on live when you can buy a full 12+1 months for $45 or less with google checkout on buy.com?????????

1. XboxLive- Single Gamertag follows you everywhere, you don't need to be in a Live enabled game to access XboxLive friends and messages. Then there's the obvious voice/text chat. XboxLive market place has a wealth of content, free or otherwise. Demos, full games, DLC for games, TV shows, movies, themes, pictures, etc. The recent Netflix deal will add more.

2. Cannot comment. Not a fighting gamer.

3. Cannot comment, do not have a PS3. I'm using my X360 as our home theatre system. We use XboxLive to "rent" the latest blockbusters in 720p, never have to leave the house, no longer use our DVD player, and just pop in a game when it's time to frag.

Playing fighting games on the xbox 360 is an exercise in frustration. You have to use the d-pad, but the xbox d-pad IS THE WORST CONTROL DEVICE IN EXISTENCE.

Well if you are serious about fighting games, you probably got an arcade stick anyways.

Fact is that really the only good online fighting game with unnoticeable lag is VF5 for the 360.
