Better off w/ hard drive + enclosure or all-in-one external unit?

The external enclosure plus internal hard drive probably costs more, but I'd guess would be more flexible. The all-in-one should be easier to get up & going. What do you think?

I would go with an internal HD and a HD Enclosure, especially if you have eSATA. It's as fast as an internal HD, and reliable.

Most external HD's only come with a 1 year warranty while virtually all internal drives carry either 3 or 5 years & the price of the internal models with the enclosure is usually pretty close. The only real disadvantage it going the DIY route is that most enclosures seem to only support USB 2.0 or Firewire with ESATA still being a bit on the rare side.
