I don't have strong feelings about either companies, though I thought it was flaky when the NFL signed an exclusive licensing agreement with EA. I thought Sega's NFL series was clearly superior to EA's, but EA beat them by throwing what must have been a lot of money at the NFL.

Where's the option for "neither of them are evil, they are both supremely successful corporations who are doing the best by their shareholders, despite a couple of mistakes."

The NFL wanted one company to have the license. They went with the highest bidder.

Actually Sony isn't really that bad (I worked there last summer). The only problem with this company is that >90% of the managers are guys

Sony-
-is obsessed with pushing the most offensive DRM on customers whenever possible, and won't tell you about it till their caught.
-is completly out of touch with reality, and has idiots working for PR, and believes if they say it, it must be true, no matter how absurd.
-is considering charging per car for cars in GT4 for PS3 - a very bad omen, but they havent done it yet
-their products might blow up in your face.
-often makes really expensive, although usually high quality stuff. You get what you pay for, but you'd rather not pay extra in the first place.
-makes great games quite often.
-likes to corner markets with proprietary products, but usually fails miserably. Often at the expense of the customer, indirectly insulting their intelligence. (MD, UMD, MS, Betamax, and soon to be blu-ray)

EA
-will put spyware on your computer for their benefit, tell you about it after you buy, and doublespeak about it so bad that you might actually be convinced its not that heinous.
-is obsessed with milking every damn dollar out of any sort of successful product, beating it through the ground in the process - Sims, EA Sports, Need for speed, battlefield etc
-directly insults the intelligence of its customers by doing the above, and by shoving ads, paid unlocks, and buggy games at us, and knowing that people will buy it.
-has absolutely no concern for it's employees. Will fire them at will, work them to death - the quality of the final product means absolutely nothing.
-likes to corner markets by buying anything that is successful, and sucking the life out of it, until it is a shell of its former self.
-rarely releases a product that is bug free, but to my knowledge, is unlikely to explode in your face. Then again, recommending you disable a *critical* security patch, is pretty akin to virtually blowing up your computer.

I dunno.....they're both pretty bad. Sony seems to be failing by overreaching, and EA seems to be succeeding by pure sleaze.

I vote for EA being worse. Sony has a god complex, and has had a bad streak only very recently. They will go that extra mile for quality. EA on the other hand, is pure, unadulterated evil. They will put out the bare minimum of acceptability, each and every time.

EA is a moneymaking workhorse that is a model of good business, but they really need to work on their PR.

It's still spyware as far as I'm concerned. Wiki's definition of spyware:

In the field of computing, the term spyware refers to a broad category of software designed to intercept or take partial control of a computer's operation without the informed consent of that machine's owner or legitimate user. While the term taken literally suggests software that surreptitiously monitors the user, it has come to refer more broadly to software that subverts the computer's operation for the benefit of a third party.

EA informed you....after you buy it, and can't return it. But the bolded part is EXACTLY what EA is doing with the ads in 2142. It does not benefit us in any way, it only benefits EA and the advertisers. The ads annoys us and lower the quality of the game, and regardless of how miniscule the resources it uses may or may not be, it is hijacking our cpu cycles and bandwidth solely to benefit them.

As far as them being a good business - absolutely. They make a killing. But they put out crap. Crap often sells, but I'm not going to applaud them for that.

EA and their imperialistic/demoralizing take over of all video games. (Ad's in games, buying out virtually every company they can, etc)

Thoughts?

yeah like they priced the ps3 as they did on purpose? they just happened to include a bunch of unneccesary things..not like its some crappy system that hardly has any features for $500-$600

In that case, as much as I hate EA... I would have to go with Sony. They are about as evil as an entity can become.

i love my Sony SXRD but miss the Sega NFL 2k series. And that whole laptop battery recall gave me a new battery and replaced one that only held about 20 minutes charge. I vote EA.

If ad's can make it in game real time.. couldn't *real* spyware jiffy its way in there and infest your system?

I don't really mind EA. Sure, a lot of their new games suck, but the same can be said for many publishers. Eidos' butchering of Deus Ex 2 is far worse than anything EA has ever done.

Considering the several thousand ports in your firewall that you need to open in order to play, along with uninstalling the critical security update, I'd say it's more likely you'll get some real spyware than not.

EA is worse than Sony IMO.

1) EA bought exclusive NFL license to eliminate competition (why there hasn't been a monopoly lawsuit yet is beyond my comprehension). Lead to them raising the price of Madden back up to traditional levels and yet they still can't get all the bugs out of their software.

2) EA publishes games for all consoles and for PC. They own many of the most loved franchises on the planet due to buying out someone with a good idea. However, once they buy the good idea they bastardize it and pimp it out for as much money as they can before it burys itself under its own pile of BS.

3) EULAs from EA are too over encompasing. Even though they state they're only getting your IP for ads in BF2142, there is plenty of verbage in the EULA for them to run whatever software they deem necessary to get the "right" ads to the "right" people. Even though Sony's rootkit was an awful thing to do, the legal verbage in EA's EULAs gives them every legal right to do much worse than a rootkit.

4) EA has the potential to have a virtual monopoly in their field and are an awful company. While Sony is awful as well, there are plenty of competitors with which to spend your hard earned money with. Even if the PS3 were to bankrupt Sony, I'm sure all the beloved franchises (Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, etc.) would just start migrating over to other systems (EA might just buy these as well...shudders at the though of Final Fantasy in EA's hands).

5) Fight Night 2006 (a.k.a. give us two bucks or we get to spam one of your personal e-mail accounts). Nuff said.

6) Every EA game I've ever fired up has at least 3-4 videos (branding, adverts, etc.) before you get to the actual game screen. This is right up there with RIAA unskippable propaganda on DVD videos. I paid for content, not (filler+content+ads+a slap in the face). I say slap in the face because I'm pretty sure the pirated version of content doesn't have the RIAA BS still included...way to punish paying customers.

7) EA's employees had to sue to get paid for backlogged overtime hours.

If we only compare games divisions then EA is far worse, Sony is just plain stupid in that respect.
Comparing both companies as a whole, Sony is far worse.

ea just screws over gamers
sony has its dirty mitts all over the place. they are the riaa+mpaa:p they are rootkit, they are sh*t proprietary formats, they are crippled drm'd nonsense that let apple steam roll over their portable audio market and of course sony tells tons of lies to hype each playstation launch.
