better means of computer data security

I not sure this is exactly the correct place but I did not see a security division.

Anyway, the company I work for (an accounting firm) just recently got paranoid (or at least has in my opinion) about the possiblilty of client data being compromised if one of our computer workstations were to get stolen and/or lost. Therefore, they are in the process of putting an encryption software package named (PointSec) on every workstation in the firm.

I am wondering if there is not some way of accomplishing the protection of our data other than the installation of this software.

It seems to me that this PointSec software slows the speed of the computer down too much.

I had an older workstation that had only 256mb of memory on it and only a 1.8ghz processor (that did NOT have the PointSec software installed on it) and I have just received a new workstation that has 2gb of memory and a 2.8ghz processor (that DOES have the PointSec installed on it) and to me there is no question that my older system was much quicker/responsive than my brand new system.

I certainly have NO expertise is computer security issues, but it would seem to me that there just has to be a better solution to this problem.

Your opinions/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Protect the data by storing it on the server and using dumb terminals to access it? Kinda sounds like common sense to me... if you can't secure the machine the data is stored on, don't store it there.

On occasions the data has to go out into the field with accountants as they perform audit, etc., thus data can not be stored exclusively on the server.

Thanks.

BitLocker, TrueCrypt, etc. There's a lot of full volume encryption products out there, some better than others.

If the performance decrease from using PointSec is really as great as it appears to you, maybe upgrading all those "field clients" to Vista and using bitlocker would accomplish what you need?
