Sandy Bridge and 2011 Xeon's are coming out in what 6-8 months time. What sthe point going westmere if SB xeon's are coming?

... getting a 10 core westmere beast for your server 8 months before the next thing?

Yeah I could see these things being pretty potent for heavy virtualization, a 4P 40-Core solution running 256GB or more of memory in a standard rackmount setup.

This is different from those 2011 parts. They support much better RAS, memory capacity, and can natively support 8 socket systems. The CPU and the platform also has performance enhancements that the people buying these kind of CPUs need. These RISC-replacement CPUs as Intel calls it, takes about 1.5 years for new version to arrive. Since Nehalem-EX aka Xeon 7500 arrived early 2010, its about right.

True, the volume is significantly less, but its purpose built for those people and companies that need them. Which is why the real successor to this chip won't arrive until another 1.5 years later, or early 2013: http://forum.hardware.fr/hfr/Hardware/Processeur/unique-processeurs-bridge-sujet_853609_13.htm

Sandy Bridge-EX (10-12 cores) will not be out until 2012 at the earliest. These are not the SB (LGA2011) CPUs that will replace Bloomfield. Remember, Nehalam-EX (Beckton) was released well after Nehalam was released.

The estimated die size is ~500mm2. Sandy Bridge EX is a low cost 4P enabler just like the Opteron 61xx, so that isn't the successor either.

Which chip are you referring to? Both the 10 core Westmere-EX and 8 core Sandy Bridge EX are fully monolithic, single die parts. Poulson, the 32nm Itanium with 50MB of total on-chip cache(L1/L2/L3/Directory) and 8 cores measure 544mm2.

you know what an ex chip is right? I didn't think so! Its not late and its not just a server chip . Its mission critical with ras features/.

Wow 30MB L3 Cache

12 cores , Westmere has arrived!!! soo sorry for all those that bought a mandybridge 2600k ,,, ouch...

Did you think about what you were going to say before you posted it? These are socket 1567. Research it.

because the average home user is totally going to buy a server only processor with 10 physical cores (20 virtual via HT) for thousands of dollars that is only available on a server socket which is only available in 2P and 4P configurations.

I have to say, if these clockspeeds are right, it's not a very big upgrade from Nehalem-EX. 2 more cores, a bit more cache and a few more MHz won't give it a massive performance increase. AMD may actually have a shot with Bulldozer/Interlagos until the sucessor to this chip.
