Better IDE Drivers for GA-7DXR Setup?

Am getting slow DVD Rips using Clad MDEC 1.1 and 1.2 and SmartRipper 2.40 with a Toshiba 16X DVD ROM. Usually about 2X Rips taking 30 minutes for a full DVD.

IDE settings in WinXP Read as follows:

Primary IDE Channel (Multi-Word DMA Mode 2 - Hooked up to TDK
24/10/40 Burner)
Secondary IDE Channel (Hooked up to Toshiba 16X DVD ROM)
Via BusMaster IDE Controller (MS XP Pro Driver)

I am using Gigabyte GA-7DXR with Athlon XP 1800+ and a RAID 0 config with dual Maxtor 60GB 7200 RPM disks. I have tried Gigabyte and Promise drivers for IDE 1 and 2 (3 and 4 are for the RAID). Nervous about 4-in-1 VIA chipset drivers since the GA-7DXR is a hybrid AMD and VIA mobo.

Set-up kicks ass in all other areas but have noticed bad DVD extraction speed and flaky CD-RW operation. It is a crap shoot to get a CD-RW to work with a drag and drop operation utilizing DirectCD (Roxio). No problems burning CD-R's with a whole host of burning applications, though. CD-R Burns at 24X and smokes through discs like butter.

Mobo uses hybrid combo AMD761 chipset (north) and VIA chipset south.

Big question: Anybody using some new VIA drivers or other drivers on this board or similar hybrid board that function well under XP for the burner and DVD-ROM?

I am nervous about installing 4-in-1 drivers 4.35 from VIA due to warning on VIA's web site about hybrid chipsets (i.e. mixed AMD and VIA chipsets on same board like I have.) Maybe I should just be happy with having a stable system that is a little slow on DVD-ROM rips. Perhaps a hardware solution such as a PCI ide controller (Ultra ATA 33) with its own drivers could be a good way to bypass this problem.

Any expert feedback will be appreciated. Will provide cool FTP site access to any posts that are considered especially helpful.
