better hyperterminal?

the XP hyperterminal's history is JUNK, 98 seemed to be fine. You can never depend on it. any freeware telnet clients that work well?


edit: sorry maybe I should rephrase, any console programs. Are they consoles? Basically I need to "connect" using a serial port. Does putty do that?
 
the problem is that the buffer is always messed up. I've resorted to using a copy of win98 hyper-terminal.
