Better HD performance. 4x7200 Seagate RAID 10 or 1 Raptor?

I want performance, but I also want quiet. If a RAID 10 would give me similar performance to a single raptor, it would be worth the additional expense to me.

Performance would be measured by "all around", since I use my computer for everything from business apps to audio production to gaming.

it depends, the RAID would be better for large files, whereas the Raptor would be better for lots of smaller files. Last I check RAID doesn't speed up your drive's seek time 😛

This is an odd comparison - say if you're using 4 Seagate 120 GB drives in RAID10, you'd have a total of 230+ GB on that array, but have only 74 GB with that one Raptor. Its more likely you'll use larger drives than 120 GB.

Based on your requirements, I'd say you'd need more storage, which is why I'd say RAID10 is the way to go. But then again...I'm not sure if buying 4 drives is justified. Why not stick with RAID5, where you'll get 33% more storage, better performance than RAID0/10 and still have parity? Yes, this does mean buying a RAID5 card, but I think it will be far better than a RAID10 solution.

Bunnyfubbles is spot on.
