ok, I've been looking for a new HD for my system (win vista home 64bit). Of the two deals I've found, which sounds like a better option? I'm looking for a quicker drive mainly.

Seagate 7200.12 500gb for $49.99

or

Hitachi 7K1000 1tb for 69.99

muchos thanks in advance...

if that's the single platter 500gb, i'm sure that's a great drive. hopefully they've fixxed their reliability issues.

the hitachi is pretty quick but has lots of platters (five?), so i'm sure it gets a lot hotter.

why are you comparing drives so far apart in capacity? pick out how much space you actually need, then decide on what brand to go with.

these two seemed to be the best deals going. I don't need too much space but I thought it might be worth the extra cash for the 1tb.

The Hitachi is a great deal for storage drive.

Not going to be the fastest though.

I would suggest an SSD for OS drive, but if that's not in the budget, the 640 GB WD or the 1 TB WD Black would do well.

Actually, the newer Hitachi 1TBs are 3-platter and supposedly faster than the WD 1TB black in read/write, the black only has slightly better access time. The Hitachi 1TB is the better deal going on right now. The benefit in speed isn't worth the $30 difference, but you do get a better warranty.

wow... I appreciate all of the help here! one more Q... is it better to go with a smaller drive for my OS? I've read pro and con for just about everything and my head is ready to explode. :)

A nice small SSD always gets the job done. I would wait until someone sorts out the TRIM function in Win 7.

Good pick... Unless the drive arrives DOA or dies in a week :p

No matter what, I'd still buy the WD Black drives. :)
