Better gaming performance with upgrading to Q9000 from a P8700?

Quick specs:

Q9000 - 2Ghz Quad core, 6mb cache, 1066FSB
P8700 - 2.53Ghz Dual core, 3mb cache, 1066FSB - Overclockable to 2.89Ghz in my laptop

Looking to upgrade my P8700 to a Q9000 here pretty soon...not that the P8700 is slow per se, but I can see the limitations of the dual core in some games like Crysis, The Saboteur, and Metro 2033.

My first concern is heat. Will there be issues at all with heat? The P8700 never breaks 65C overclocked (2.9ghz) when running OCCT Linpack test...so I doubt the Q9000 will be MUCH hotter...what are the thermal limits on these things?

Also, looking at Notebookcheck.com the GTX260m scores seem universally slower with the Q9000 compared to the likes of the T9400-T9550, both of which are clocked lower than my P8700 (which is overclocked to 2.9ghz, this obviously being faster despite lower cache).

How accurate are these scores? On the same page, games like Modern Warfare are like 10fps FASTER on a T9400 (2.5ghz, 6mb chache) than they are on the system running the 1.6ghz quad i7!

Its just that Im real close on pulling the trigger on a Q9000 and would just like to know if Im doing a good thing or not. Im fairly confident itll be overclockable as the Asus has its overclocking utility and the P8700 is rock solid at 2.9ghz.

It would seem that in todays games a quad would be better, even if the clock speed per core is slower than a dual core...it would seem that more and more games use quad cores...and those that dont should be "older" enough to play fine on 2 cores in the Q9000...my opinion of course.

Even if I cant overclock, 8ghz quad seems just better than the 5.8ghz on the overclocked P8700...I dont know...anyone have some ideas or opinions?

I highly doubt it'd be worth it for gaming. Most games today still don't benefit that much from having more than 2 cores, and you'll see a (sometimes rather noticeable) drop in framerates considering how much slower each core will be if you get the Q9000. Of the games you mention, I've played Crysis and Metro 2033, and neither of them see any real benefit from a quad over a dual. They're massively GPU limited.

What would you think about future proofing wise? Plus, Im rather confident (though not 100%) that the Q9000 will be overclockable...at least to 2.4ghz seems the norm...

If you're looking to game get a desktop. I have an asus laptop with the gtx 260m and it's fun to play on the go but I bet a $70 desktop graphics card would smoke it.

I generally avoid trying to upgrade for the future. There's no real point getting a quad now if you aren't playing games that make use of it - you might as well wait until a game that you want to play that really needs a quad comes out. Even then, it might not be worth it, since it'll reduce the playability of games that aren't multithreaded that well.

I do have a gaming desktop...see sig haha...

And I dont know about the $70 gfx card beating the GTX260m...unless you buy used or something, the GTX is still pretty damn fast!

I don't know what a 4850 costs nowadays but I'm sure it's close to $70 and I'm pretty sure it would smoke it.

I love my asus laptop with a gtx260m. So much so I've thought about selling the desktop in sig as much gaming as I do lately. I just got done with oblivion and am now on Fallout 3.

NO... Just no... 2GHz quad core =/= 8GHz. 2 GHz is 2 GHz.

You're seeing higher framerates on the higher clocked dual cores because of the clockspeed alone. The lower clocked quad cores are just slower with apps that aren't multithreaded.

With all the research you've done, you already have your answer.
