better cooling for an evga 6800gt

anybody out there have some suggestions?

i used to use the zalman vf700, it was fantastic... but it won't fit in my new matx case due to poor layout.

i'm thinking i need to watercool my 6800gt and have limited space to do so. the design of my case cools everything except the agp slot well and the location is poor as well, it's the outside slot so minimal clearance, not too much room beyond stock cooler height, a total of 3/4" from card to case cover. so... watercooling or some other slim cooler becomes my only option.

before folks ask, yes i have cleaned out the hsf etc. temps are still higher than my liking. with the case cover off and the system running games temps are acceptable. once the cover goes on temps are too high. i'm using rivatuner to track this.

i am looking at this zalman waterblock in particular but any other options are appreciated, thanks folks.

I didn't know there was a Maze 5 out. 😱

I have the VF900 on my 6800GT and it's quite nice for cooling. I don't OC though.

the vf900 is 30mm thick, my available space is ~20mm. i'm sure it's even better than my vf700 but neither will fit unfortunately.

it looks like even the dangerden maze4 is too thick at almost an inch. for equivalency, i have ~.75" to work with.

from the scarce information i've been able to dig up via google, it seems that the maze5 may actually work since the thickness seems to be ~.5". the zalman is also an option since the thickness is reported at 20mm.

that would be the ticket!

in the meantime, i disassembled earlier today, cleaned and reapplied as5. temps have dropped slightly but not enough. it was pretty clean to begin with, altho the factory compound had dried out some.

i'll keep this thread updated with progress.

What about that new thermalright one which takes pipes to the other side of the card

heatpipe is an option, however the thermalright v1 (which is what i assume you're talking about) is listed as incompatible with the agp version of the 6800gt. it will work with the pcie version however.

another issue with that is the low-profile usb card i have in the pci slot behind the 6800gt. it's the only pci slot but i desperately needed additional usb ports on that machine so that was where they went.

the other heatpipe solutions aren't rated so well 🙁

Um...

Buy a bigger case?!?!?! 😉

you could use the cooler you have now and cut a vent hole in the case to line up with the fan on your card. it would be a cheap and easy way to fix this. .. or make a hole so your bigger cooler sticks out? that cool look cool and cool well too.

AGP one isnt layed out any different than pci-e except the hsi bridge which is on the pci-e one (and right beside the core)...

I bet it will work 🙂 --> heatpipe with that you would need a fan for effectiveness

wow, after some research that thermalright definitely appears to be the way to go. $50 bones 🙁 but ya gotta pay to play i suppose.

after upgrading my htpc and reassembling, i simply cannot handle the noise of the stock geforce 6800gt cooler.

only problem i foresee is the 4 port usb card i have in the pci slot directly behind the agp port. stupid mainboard design but the woman loves the aesthetics of the htpc case so it stays 🙂

cooling design is better than i originally thought, with some slight modification internally the only problem is the noise from the stock cooler. so... i'll try this thermalright out and get an external usb hub for my multiple usb devices. thanks for the info on that one

unbelievable, after checking the length on the heatsink, the power supply in my case is going to prevent me from using the thermalright. i thought i had found the perfect solution. i thought wrong :|

so... any other ideas?

the thermalright one you have in the pic is the hr-03. the only other thermalright i was thinking he could be talking about is the v1 which will not fit.

i have ~20mm (3/4") on the front side of the card. there is significantly more room on the back side of the card... altho anything towards the rear (i/o panel) is pretty much blocked by the power supply... there is the same ~20mm between the video card and the psu... and there is a low profile usb card there in the only pci slot on the board.

this system is pretty freakin small, it looks great but is overall a pita :|
