Better bandwidth control with a WRT54G

The network at my house is around 5 or 6 PC's hooked up to a WRT54G which is connected to 6mb/768k DSL. The thing is, occasionally one of my roommates runs some P2P crap that hogs the bandwith and screws up my ping in games and whatnot.

I've heard that there are some nice hacked firmware versions out there for this router that give you better control over bandwidth that users can get among other things, and I was wondering if anyone here has used it and if it's any good. I'd ideally like to be able to throttle down all computers except mine to around a max of 100K down and 20K up, or just reserve a set ammount for my computer.

Any thoughts?

There are several hacked firmware versions for the WRT54G that will let you do this. I use Freeman and it has the capaibility to set up QoS or just limit the speed of specific ports.

I think the standard Linksys firmware also has QoS if you want to just look in there (But this is based off of using a V5 WRT54G).

If you have a version 4 or earlier, you can do that easily.
I have dd-wrt on my local router. under the "applications &gaming" tab, there is a qos tab.

you can moderate qos by port, or put in his mac address andd your mac address, and give your mac priority over his.
if he is plugged into a port on the router, you can drop his traffic down to a max of 256 or 512k. 512 should do the trick with your connection🙂
