Betrayer washes you ashore in the New World in 1604, where you’re expecting to join a struggling English colony on the Virginia coast. Instead you find only ghosts and mysteries in a land drained of color and life. You’ll build up an arsenal of weaponry including muskets, crossbows and throwing axes, collecting untold treasures along the way. Chart your own course through an untamed wilderness teeming with danger and discovery as you search for survivors and unravel the colony’s many mysteries, including the identity of the strange, silent woman in red who helps from afar

Bought this last night on steam. Kind of like a cross between skyrim and stalker. You can set the colour scheme to black and white or colour. I went with colour and it looks stunning. Nice effect is the trees and plants blowing in the wind. You don't see that on many games

Try this if you liked playing a sneaky archer on skyrim

Just picked this up on Steam. Looks interesting. It seems to have generally positive comments everywhere that I looked.

The New World in 1604 could be a really good setting.

Was just looking at this. Is it like in Skyrim that one you hit around level 30, your archer is practically invincible?

I played a little bit of this game back when it was still under development. It's not really an RPG, and IMO, comparing it to Skyrim is counter-intuitive.

Rather, it's a first-person historical-fiction horror/adventure game, in which you find yourself washed up on the shore of a lost American colony around the turn of the 17th century. You start out with basically no information whatsoever, and as you go inland and explore the area a little further, it gets creepier and creepier. You slowly learn more and more about how the colony started out fine and then gradually became strangled and ruined by some evil presence.

It's very intriguing, and I highly recommend it. The horror element feels unique. They managed to create a very disturbing/unnerving atmosphere in an otherwise bright and sunny outdoor environment. There is something of a stealth system and the weapon/inventory mechanics are kind of RPG-ish, but not by much. It's been a while since I've played though... so a lot of things could have changed. Combat is a little repetitive, but otherwise the game was really interesting. I'm excited to go back and play the whole thing.

It looks and feels like skyrim. It's actually astonishing how similar some of it looks. I'll post a couple of screenshots tonight after work

im wondering how you deal with Lichs in the tombs.. 300 arrows to kill um while it takes them 2-4 direct hits to kill you. Not to mention the Scourge or Death overlords in those tight tombs where you cant use range to dodge spells. I know I'm exaggerating on 300 arrows, but even with 90's and skill points in they take a crapload of shots. I spose i could cheat and use the stacks (potion enchanting etc) to make my stats ungodly but it is just that, GOD mode, sword, spell or arrow.. I suppose you can use the "its in the game" defence... but Beth has said in the forums its not intended to be used that way, but since people like to take the easy way out they have left it in. "put a weight on your keyboard and sneak behind a wall with an enemy" sure .. 100 sneak in a few hours.. But maybe you are right on the easy difficulty levels, never tried um so dont know. I do think the MAGE is a bit OP, and i wont argue a stealth Archer is OP too... but cant use the stealth much in tight spaces. And once i get to 30 I'm hitting Scourge lords and such.. they are no pushovers. or Arch Mages with ice lance that can 2 shot ya.. heck.. maybe I just find it harder, is very possible.

sorry for derail, very interested in game now that is compared to Skyrim.. I was on fence, but am going to grab now.

one question, is combat only ranged? it seems that way in videos.

I never had a problem with them, TBH. I don't use poisons or archery-fortify potions unless I'm fighting a dragon or dragon priest, and I didn't bother with any enchanting until very late in the game (like well after I hit 100 archery) (I did have a lot of good fortify-archery gear, but that was all stuff that I found or bought from merchants).

The key is smithing (find and buy a whole lot of good smithing gear, and make a few smithing potions) and stealth. Consistently getting that 3x sneak-attack bonus is critical, and with really high stealth (the silence perk is quite nice), it's incredibly easy to remain hidden, even in the dungeons (with max stealth, I've had enemies walk in front of me without immediately detecting me). There were many dungeons that I was able to clear without the detection eye ever fully opening (at least, until the boss).

The drauger are especially easy to kill as an archer because most of them are sleeping and won't wake until you get close (or you attack them). And it's fairly easy to tell which ones are inert and which ones will wake up (if armored and/or armed, shoot it), so I can pick them off one by one from a distance with all sneak attack bonuses. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. And once I got the Aura Whisper shout (with the silent casting perk), things became so easy that it's started being not so fun (I had to ratchet up the difficulty level the farther I got into the game and ended up at Legendary wishing that there's an even higher level because sneak-archery is just that overpowered.)

(Though not nearly as overpowered as a sneak-dagger build with high illusion magic for invisibility spamming--sneak right up to the a dragon priest boss that's searching for you, one hit kill on Legendary.)

(Oh, and all followers--even Serana--suck if you want to be stealthy. If I bring one along as a pack mule, I'll tell them to hang back a room or two while I go forth and assassinate everything solo.)

Sorry for going totally off-topic. I do very much enjoy sneak-archery (best part of the Tomb Raider reboot), so I might consider this game...
