BetaMax versus VHS

betamax or possibley an improved version or derivitive of it was being used when i interviewed with direct tv and toured their facility...so id say betamax

thats the thing: sony's betamax failed because of lack of studio support. Blu-ray on the other hand, happens to have HUGE studio support but HD-DVD has better industry backing. Usually studio support prevails so we might get lucky in that blu-ray is a better medium in the long run and more advanced, so seeing it prevail would be great. Players just gotta get cheaper.
I think the PS3 will sell like hotcakes JUST for the BD-ROM. With Sony's decision to kill off HDCP on the PS3, any and all HDTV's can hook up and watch BD-ROM movies.

Yep, it was FAR better qualitywise. But SONY, in their wonderous ways, wouldn't license it for any less than an arm and a leg, so the studios went with the cheaper solution.

VHS's only real advantage was longer playing time.

errr...only 4 years old, so i would have to go with whatever is shinier..........by the way i think none of them are going to stick.........for a while. dvd's will be king for a long time to come.

BetaMax was superior. It had less red bleed and a simpler tape path. The pro version is called BetaCam and was pretty much the successor to 3/4" carts.
