Singstar has better reviews than Lips, has a much bigger library, you can also download and upload music videos if you have the PS3 Eye accessory. Oh, and the starter bundle for Singstar is cheaper too.

Singstar is a long established franchise so it currently has the better overall features and presentation.

Lips is MS's first effort with a couple of innovative features (the microphones, song import) and seems to be fun judging from reviews but doesn't have the polish and feature set that Singstar has. The song import feature also feels incomplete currently. Lips is adding songs to its library via DLC.

What I've read is that Lips only shows you three or four words ahead, which basically makes doing songs you don't know impossible.

I'd give some thought to Rock Band, too, but if it's pure karaoke you're after, SingStar is your best bet at this time.

I've actually been looking into this as well and one thing that's been bothering me is when I tried to look up the list for Singstar on Wikipedia, it has three columns... one of them is "Removed"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S...3)#American_track_list

Does that mean that they removed Gorillaz for Coldplay? And who could remove Twisted Sister!?!?!?

I've tried them all and at this point I'd say

1 Rockband is the best even just for singing imo

2. Singstar because it has a better selection currently than LIPS

3. Lips cuz it is new and doesn't have that much DLC yet. Although I like the interface better and the microphones are awesome.

Isn't it also true that you can't fail out in Lips? The mics are also wireless from what I've seen.

Yep, you can't fail out in Lips. The mics are wireless and motion-sensing for you to do certain moves to get multiplier bonuses a la Guitar Hero.

While I read Singstar is good, the thing lips has going for it is that you can plug in your zune or ipod and karaoke to any mp3 you have on it. So regardless of the songs that come with the game, you have thousands of songs available to you.

Of course, the lyrics don't come on screen (the game has some sort of music beat detecting stuff to assist what to show on screen), but that doesn't really matter when everyone has had a few drinks. If you have your tags correct you could print out the lyrics though. It's an extra step, but worth it to some if you want to sing any song you want.

Of course I prefer rb2, but the selection is limited, and the girls singing hate doing songs they don't know and/or are hard. Five hours of no doubt and weezer gets boring.

It should be worth mentioning that the a patch has been released for the PS3 to make PS2 Singstar games work. You have to start with PS3 Singstar and then swap out the disks to get the PS2 Singstar songs.

Just to make sure, I assume that the singstar mics are the same between the PS2 and the PS3 since they're just USB? My little brother plays these and already has Singstar for the PS2, so instead of spending money on the Singstar bundle, I could get Singstar (game only) and Singstar ABBA (game only) (my mom likes ABBA so maybe she'd play for a song or two before getting embarrassed :p).

Well, you're getting the song, the lyrics, and the video on songs that have a video. The pricing is in line with Rock Band and Guitar Hero DLC and 50 cents (40 MS points) more than DLC from Karaoke Revolution: American Idol.
