What is with this? I was just there killing some time in the PC parts section. I saw a HD USB tv tuner that was label as "floor model, package open, returned" and it was *more* (about $25) than the unopened one. Then i saw an IDE cable package labeled the same way and it was more (about $8) than the unopened one. What gives?

Best Buy is in business to extract the most money possible from stupid people and stupid people have been trained to believe the open-box deals are cheaper so they don't question the price.

You see, they are charging you for the convience of already testing the product. Obviously the product worked and is back on the shelf. Which means they can charge you an "it works" fee.

Most likely the price has been adjusted down on the new product, and they forgot to change the label on the opened product.

Common sense people.

It's much more amusing to make fun of Best Buy instead of thinking about common retail practices.

Best Buy does not follow common retail practices.

Best Buy Sux

still some of the cheapest prices and recently they have been coming out with occasional deals.

However, Motley Fool rated is as the worst stock for 2008 Here
But it has more to do with the retail sector suffering as a whole.

Why didn't you just ask one of the guys the reason for the price difference?

I shop there for not having to deal with rebates, regular price stuff might not be worth going there, but on sale or clearance? you won't beat them.

picked up a 500gb Seagate for $99 no rebate, cheaper than Newegg + no shipping or waiting for shipping. Only a few bucks cheaper than Egg, but it was cheaper.

picked up a $200 Logitech diNovo Edge Keyboard on clearance for $69. You can argue the KB isn't worth even close to $200, but I've yet to find it ANYWHERE for even close to as cheap. Find me a non referbished Edge today for less then $150, you can't do it. I still see these @ Fry's & CC and most other places for $199.

picked up an external LG 20X DVD burner for $30 cheaper than anywhere online.

picked up an open box Canon printer, inks hadn't even been installed was told it was returned because the person thought it came with a USB cable and didn't want to buy one. Paid $60 retail was $99

16 gig ipod touch open box, was missing the shitty Apple headphones - $350

Razer Trantuala KB $70 bucks, this was when they were $99 mostly everywhere else.

in 07 with all the stuff I bought @ BB I've saved easily $500 over what I would have paid online, probably more. And nothing I bought required me to send in a rebate form and wait for money. If you go in for sales you can get some of the best deal I've ever seen. I wouldn't buy memory/cpu/MB type stuff there but anything else my.

I don't give 2 shits about the idiots who work there, I like to save money so I shop there for sale items, you can hate BB and spend more money that's up to you.

I saw an open PS3 recently at BB for $25 less than new... only problem is that whoever repacked it or originally owned it decided to beat the box to crap. Whatever was inside couldn't have looked much better. I can see that they want to recoup as much money as they can, but their open box pricing is a joke.

On the same note, what the hell does everyone do with their games and game boxes? Everytime I go to EB, all of their used stuff looks terrible and beaten up. Every single one of my boxes, some 5 years old, look as good as new minus an intact plastic seal.

QueBert is right. You don't shop there for their every day prices. But like everywhere, their deals can be very good. I loath BestBuy too, but got a $650 laptop there for $400. And yes, you do have to spell it out for some people.

I know people who still won't shop there on principle alone. it's not like Hitler runs the company and there's a valid reason to never ever shop there.

I wanted a keyboard that was $179-$200 online, offline, everywhere. I saw it there for $69. If I hated BB that much and stuck to my guns I would have ended up paying 200 elsewhere for it, what the fuck kind of sense does that make? Their clearance items can't be beat, and it's not old outdated junk. I got a KB that was less then 9 months old and the latest model from them. I could always go to CC where I have to hunt down a person to take me to some weird little kiosk to ring me up (WTF?) and deal with 2-3 mail in rebates to get a deal not as good as I'd get out the door as Best Buy. And seeing how my BB will price match for me with me printing out a screen shot of whatever deal I see at CC or some other store. No reason for me to shop anywhere else. Cept for 'Egg online.

You haters can keep your morals and not shop there, I will go there for sales and clearances and use the hundreds I save to buy more shit :D
