My family and I live in North Carolina. New to the east coast yet. Whats the best zoo (aquarium too) within a days (8-12 hours) drive? Can people give me some ideas? We have a four day weekend this weekend, and wanted to go somewhere. Thanks.

Surprisingly, the North Carolina Zoo is very nice, and will probably take a full day to see completely.

Depending on where in North Carolina you are, the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. might also be a good option.

Any of the big city zoos. I've only ever been to Philly and Cape May Park. Cape May Park is AMAZING. How there are giraffes and elephants living outdoors in Southern NJ is astounding. While small zoos like Cape May can't boast the most exotic animals, they are very cool b/c they have smaller pens and smaller crowds and you can get a much closer look at the animals.

I imagine the zoos in NYC are pretty impressive, too.

The Bronx Zoo just opened a new tiger habitat that's supposed to be pretty cool. If you want to make a long trip, the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans is one of the best zoos in the US. There are also about a zillion Busch Gardens on the East Coast.

Where in NC is this zoo?

The old Central Park Zoo (before they fixed it up). If you even thought about going into the "Money House" a crap stain would magically appear on your shirt.

It's in Asheboro (I think that's near the middle of the state).

North Carolina Zoo

The NC Zoo in Asheboro zoo is actually pretty nice. Asheboro is about 30 minutes south of Greensboro. I belive you can get there from Raliegh on highway 64...not sure about Fayetteville though. Fayetnam is not too far from GSO, so the drive shouldn't be that bad.

Bronx Zoo is humongous. Don't know how good it is, just know it's very big.
It usually gets good ratings, but that's a hell of a trip from Fayetteville for a day at the zoo!

Ok, so now Im thinking...

North Carolina Zoo (1.5 hours from here, we can do that on friday.) Stay the night there....then drive to one of those aquariums in TN....unless theres one closer.

Yeah I really enjoyed the bronx zoo, you get out of the car and all of the "concrete jungle" and you step into this amazing maze of habitats, I don't remember a great aqarium though (its been a while, so I may be mistaken)

If you do go to Baltimore, make sure you eat at Philips. Best seafood on the eastern seaboard!

ARE YOU JOKING? Philips is NOT even close to the best seafood on the eastern seaboard. Have you ever been to Boston?
