Best X800XL?

I know I want a silent system, and so I like the Gigabye X800XL (fanless), but I'm wondering if it will get too hot?

What's a good alternative card?

Edit: Through a friend I can get an X800XL for 50% off list price ($150) plus a little service charge... Is takign the HSF off easy? I want to put a Zalman cooler on....

yes without adequate airflow. In the regular open case miost benchmarkers use, it got to 90-100*c and throttled itself. But in a well ventilated, good airflow case, it's only around 5-10* hotter than average.

BBa is nice.

Yea but I dont want my case temp severely hotter which will get me high CPU temps too (definitely a factor when OCing)...

sapphire sells one with a zalman heatsink already on it, so you'd keep your warranty =) though it costs more than the others of course

it wont affect it anymore than a fanned x800xl. Both a passive and fanned dissapate te same amount of heat, just that the passive x800xl runs hotter.

lets say a chip produces 300BTU.
Now a Fan might remove 280BTU per hour so that it runs at say 50*
a passive cooler might only remove 230BTu so it runs at say 65*c. The same amount of heat is create fro both cards, just 1 has a hotter chip since not all that much heat is dissapated.

It's been OOS for a while.

HIS cards look the better.

A dead one?

(for those that expect it) 😉

I like BBA and Asus for ATI products personally, although those HIS ones with the premounted Arctic are pretty sweet.

It should be fine and actually seems to be cooler than some actively cooled X800 XL solutions.

Tech-report ran their card for eight hours straight looping benchmark in a poorly cooled case (a single fan) and it completed the test without incident.

Although what's the quality of their products? I've posted asking that but not a lot of people have bought their cards it seems.
