So I'm getting the crazy idea of upgrading my i3 haswell htpc to a ryzen 1700. I figure I'll wait and see what happens with zen2000 vs zen 3000 performance in the next few months along with prices. Whichever I go with I figure I could pick up a x470 itx mobo for the 1700 for a nice discount.

Any opinions on a good board for it? I probably want an hdmi out or digital audio out ports instead of running it through a video card hdmi (v to my a/v receiver and probably wifi for easy internet connection. Video card will be a rx 570 or a gtx 960.

TIA

I'm a little confused. You want a mobo with an HDMI video-output, but you want to use a Ryzen CPU, which does not support video-output or HDMI audio output, and then you want to use a dGPU (RX 570), but NOT use the HDMI output of the card, for some odd reason? Do I have this straight?

there are only a few x470 ITX boards out there and they are expensive.

I ordered a B450 ITX board for my HTPC and it will arrive Wednesday. It even has digital audio out (which I won't use). I bought an R3 2200G for it so I won't need a video card.

I didnt know you couldn't use the hdmi port for audio out. Good to know.

Edit: Looks like its mostly asrock who has optical out built in but some b450/470 boards have outputs on the board to use with an adapter.

Im curious why you want to do this upgrade? The haswell i3 is still a decent cpu as a htpc, even with a decent video card it will do gaming as well. As for your sound, does your reciever have any hdmi inputs?

My Asrock X470-ITX has optical out. There's no reason to buy X470 though when the B450 version is 99% the same and cheaper.

I'm also a little confused about your request. A R7 1700 and RX 570 is overkill for an HTPC. Why not just sell both (if you have them already) and get a B450 + 2200g combo?

Money is not a concern and why go through the process of buying a new 2200g when I have a 1700 not really in use at this point along with a couple of spare video cards that would likely be far more powerful than a 2200g's video. The only thing I don't have is an itx mobo. So if I see a good deal on a 2700x/x470 or the new zen 2 chips performance is that good, I can upgrade my desktop and htpc running a 4-5 year old haswell i3.

Would picking up a haswell i5 or i7 and throwing a better video card be a viable option? Use the 1700 for something else?

Possibly but the cost would be similar to buying a new board, especially an i7.
