That's what I know, love and played for 6+ hours straight yesterday. Looking for something new - but w/ good graphics like that (my old version of MS CFSII wasn't nearly as good).

Il2: Forgotten Battles (skip the first one, 2nd is better).

It is the ONLY one - everything other WW2 sim is a toy by comparison.

When all you want to do is fly, why play a game where you join a server and have to fight off 5 other plane-campers and maybe get in one or two good flights before you switch to a map with no planes?

not to mention bf1942 planes don't have all those fancy dials and meters (well, ones that actually work). I've heard alot of flight sim fans complain about this.. I've never played a flight sim, so I could care less.. bf1942 is real enough for me :p

Battlefield sucks when flying, why you ask? because you have to turn around when you get to the end of the map, HOW SH1T IS THAT!

A flight sim is a flight sim, and the maps are 1000 times larger then a game which dedicates only a small portion to a flight sim.

Best ww2 flight sim: IL 2 Sturmovik: Forgotten battles.

Just like the real soldiers did in WW2?

Point of a sim is to SIMULATE something. IL2 is a sim, BF1942 is a game.

Best WWII Combat Flight Sim???

pacific: 1942 Pacific Air War
europe: European Air War

keep in mind that I've always been a die-hard fan of Microprose and their simulations (way back to the early days on the C64), so that would explain my above answers. ;)

however, realize that those two games above are both older games (1942 PAW is 10 years old or so), so if it's fancy graphics that you're looking for, these are not it.

Seriously, for the European theater, IL2 may very well be better than European Air War, but honestly, for the Pacific theater, I still think 1942 Pacific Air War is the best pacific simluation to date. (in spite of its very dated graphics)

My son and I love to play Combat Flight Simulator 2, it is a lot of fun shooting down Zeros in a P-38 and Corsair.

I really wish that IL2 had American planes in it.

Forgotten Battles does - P-51 and P-47s make an appearance, along P-40s and P-39s.

The -47 and -39 are flyable now, I think they will be adding that capability to the -51 shortly. Dunno about the -40, think it already is, but I dunno.

Plus, Forgotten Battles lets you fly the Me-262 for the German side - *finally* a sim that models that plane properly!

I haven't picked up Forgotten Battles yet, I still just have the original. The main aircraft I was hoping for was a P-38.

It sounds like IL 2 Forgotten Battles is the way for me to go. I don't want the "Sim" part to be too intense. Nice dials are cool, etc...but I'm looking to have good dogfights with the use of my MS Sidewinder Precision 2 joystick and some limited keyboard input (if necessary).

Thanks for all the advice! Now I need to figure out what chain/store sells it. I don't want to wait a day to get it ;-)

You can get it pretty much anywhere, Wal Mart has it for one. GameStop does for sure.

I have flown the P-40 Warhawk and the P-47 Thunderbolt in FB. The P-51 is supposed to be included in the first patch and flyable. The P-39 Aircobra was flyable in the first IL2. I just wish there was a B-17 or B-24 in FB so I could be a ball turret gunner, but the He-111 isn't to bad. There is also Russian rocket planes and German jets (Me-262) that are flyable.

It's worth the money and can be found at Best Buy for $40 IIRC.

Il2 owns everything out there by:
1. Having unmatched realism, both historical and model.
2. having outstanding graphics (boo on all combat flight simulators with their awkawrd 2d panels)
3. awesome views
4. kick ass fighting.
So far THE best game made about the best assault aircraft.
