What do you guys read to get your news? Any good un-biased magazines or papers? Or any good biased media? I don't care...i just have a lot of time to read something other than text books. Any good reads in general on current events would be appreciated.

No magazines or papers are unbiased.

Haha...yeah i was hoping to get something that was close. I've been reading The Economist lately, so maybe something that will counter that?

Well, when I had more free time I devoured the Economist and Foreign Affairs; now I usually read the BBC online.

All news orgs are biased. I know, I work for one. Readers call and write to us from both sides of the political spectrum saying we have a blatant liberal/conservative bias. Even if they try not to be, where there are people making decisions, there is bias. A lot of the bias happens from trying to react to a perceived bias, only it is often an over reaction (Fox news).

The best way to get un-biased information is to read as much and as many different sources, and then form your own opinion. If you can recognize bias, you can get around it.

Thanks for your post. I am seeing bias more and more these days. Could you recommend a few sources I could read that would give me a general understanding of all sides?

It really depends on what you're looking for. Most local newspapers as well as national papers have an opinion section that often has two opposing viewpoints on the same subject. I don't read the op-ed section of newspapers, so I couldn't tell you which ones are the best.

As far as other editorial content goes, I try to read a balanced selection of news orgs. Places I like to visit, mostly the larger sites I go:

CNN
Drudge Report
Raw Story
The New York Times
Guardian Unlimited
BBC News
FOX News
The New Yorker
The Washington Post

A good media critique site that most journalists highly regard is Poynter Online[]

I wouldn't even bother with printed news (for world news) any more. The information is more quickly (and more up to date) on the internet. Particularly in the case of magazines such as Time, Newsweek, etc. (and they barely qualify as news journals/magazines)
